High School Roundup: CdM boys’ volleyball sweeps Laguna Beach

Sterling Foley had 11 kills and nine blocks to lead the Corona del Mar High School boys’ volleyball team to a 25-22, 25-17, 25-20 win over Laguna Beach on Wednesday in a Surf League match at home.

George Bruening contributed seven kills and seven blocks for CdM (11-5, 2-1 in the Surf League), which plays at Marina on Friday in a Sunset Conference crossover match. Jordan Cortens distributed 30 assists to go with five service aces, and Kaden Kavanaugh also had seven kills.

Laguna Beach (13-14, 0-3) plays host to Edison on Friday.

Newport Harbor 3, Huntington Beach 0: The Sailors swept the Oilers 25-22, 25-17, 25-19 on Wednesday in a Surf League match at Huntington Beach High School.

Newport Harbor (20-4, 4-0) has won its last seven matches, while Huntington Beach (12-9, 1-3) has dropped two in a row.

Edison 3, Marina 0: The Chargers defeated the host Vikings in straight sets 25-22, 25-22, 25-17 in Wednesday’s Wave League match.

Edison improved 11-9 overall and 2-1 in league. Marina (13-8, 0-3) is on a five-match losing streak.

BOYS’ GOLF

Costa Mesa 222, Katella 294: Senior Cristopher Rodriguez carded a one-over-par 36 to earn medalist honors for the Mustangs on Wednesday in an Orange Coast League match.

The teams competed from the white tees on the front nine of the Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa Country Club.

Costa Mesa, which is 4-2 overall and in league play, will tee off against Calvary Chapel (5-1) in its next league match on Monday at Willowick Golf Course.

Huntington Beach 179, Newport Harbor 191: The visiting Oilers earned their ninth straight win on Wednesday in a Surf League match at Costa Mesa Golf Course.

Huntington Beach (9-1, 1-0) visits Long Beach Wilson on Monday, while Newport Harbor (5-2, 0-2) travels to take on Edison on Tuesday.

St. Margaret’s 207, Pacifica Christian Orange County 223: Junior Charles Thurston shot an even-par-37 to earn medalist honors for the Tritons on Wednesday in an Academy League match at Costa Mesa Golf Course.

Pacifica Christian is now 3-3 overall and 0-2 in league.

BASEBALL

Huntington Beach 2, Edison 1 (eight innings): The Oilers scored a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to stun the visiting Chargers on Wednesday in a Surf League game.

Ralph Velazquez provided the walk-off double in extra innings for Huntington Beach (11-4, 6-0), which clinched at least a share of the league title. Gage Everson laid down a bunt to score Dean Carpentier as the tying run in the seventh.

Jack Kamalski scored Tanner Gerosa with a two-out single in the fourth inning for Edison (7-10, 0-4).

Laguna Beach 7, Newport Harbor 0: Griffin Naess struck out five over six scoreless innings to lead the Breakers past the Sailors on Wednesday in a Wave League game at Laguna Beach High School.

Naess added two hits and two runs batted in at the plate for Laguna Beach (8-7, 2-2), which pounded out 13 hits as a team. Nick Bonn, Noah Neufeld and Colin Kidd also had two hits apiece.

Newport Harbor dropped to 10-6 overall and 1-3 in league.

Corona del Mar 1, San Clemente 0: The Sea Kings won their sixth consecutive game on Wednesday in a nonleague game at Angel Stadium.

Corona del Mar (11-6, 4-0) travels to Marina (4-12, 1-3) on Friday as Wave League play resumes.

Canyon 4, Ocean View 2: The Seahawks dropped to 11-6 overall following Wednesday’s defeat in a nonleague game at home.

SOFTBALL

Ocean View 10, Westminster 0: The host Seahawks ended a six-game slide on Wednesday in a Golden West League game.

Mackenzie King had three hits and two runs batted in for Ocean View (5-11, 1-3). Regan Preciado and Alexis Murillo each drove in two runs. Sienna Erskine supplied three hits, and Kaitlyn Conklin also scored three runs.

Kaitlyn Knobbe scattered four hits and a walk in recording the shutout for the Seahawks. She had two strikeouts.

Estancia 40, Santa Ana 30: The Eagles won a high-scoring affair at home on Wednesday in an Orange Coast League game.

Estancia (4-10, 1-2) will play at Saddleback on Friday, as the Eagles look for their first road win of the season.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 15, Huntington Beach 4: The Sailors earned their third straight victory on Wednesday in a Sunset League match at home.

Newport Harbor improved to 6-9 overall and 2-0 in league.

Lucas Parch, Matt Withers, Dean DiCarlo and CJ Taylor had a goal apiece for Huntington Beach (5-6, 0-1).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Foothill 17, Edison 7: The host Chargers fell to 5-4 overall with Wednesday’s defeat in nonleague play.
