Full grandstands of fans welcomed some of the best high school track and field athletes from across the nation Saturday at the Arcadia Invitational.

With 547 schools entered in the two-day event, the meet remained an exclusive one, especially for the invitational session under the lights at Arcadia High School.

Corona del Mar senior Jason Plumb placed fourth in the boys’ long jump, producing a new personal record of 23 feet, 5¼ inches to lead the area’s performances. That mark leads Orange County.

The Cal commit competed against elite company, as the field included Temecula Great Oak’s JC Stevenson, a two-event winner in the long jump and the triple jump. Stevenson’s winning mark of 24-9½ in the long jump now leads the state.

“These guys were flying,” Plumb said of his competition. “I did my best. I’m happy with the results. I always say I could have done better, but these guys are some very good long jumpers, and I did all I could do, so I’m happy.”

Having an engaged crowd to play to, Plumb clapped while on the runway prior to his last jump. He commented on the environment with the spectators reacting to each jump.

“It’s so much fun coming and competing against the best guys,” Plumb added. “So many people in the stands, it just brings out the best in everybody. Why wouldn’t you want that?”

Fellow CdM senior Caroline Glessing qualified for two events in the Saturday night meet, competing in the long jump and the 200-meter sprints. She was sixth in the seeded flight of the 200 with a time of 25.81 seconds, while her opening jump of 17-½ was her best on the evening.

Newport Harbor junior Leo Davis cleared the bar at 14-3 as the area’s sole representative in the boys’ pole vault. He made three clearances, shaking off a rocky start in which he missed his first two attempts at the opening height of 13-3.

“It’s definitely nerve-wracking,” Davis, who did gymnastics growing up, said of being one attempt shy of elimination on the first height. “But I feel like that nerve-wracking [feeling] on your third jump, it really gives you that extra adrenaline to make it. That’s how I look at it.”

The Sunset Conference had two teams in the boys’ distance medley relay, Fountain Valley delivering the top local performance with a time of 10:36.69 (13th). Diego Alonso, Aidan Sapp, Luke Dias and Benjamin Prado ran the legs for the Barons.

Dias said he stuck with track and field because of the relationships he has formed, and he had his teammates in mind as he flew around the track.

“We knew we wouldn’t be able to win, but we still tried our best,” Dias said. “We pushed all we got. Seeing each person in front of me made me want to try harder to pass them for my teammates.”

Newport Harbor finished 16th in the 22-team race with a time of 10:41.96. Luke Grunburg, Cooper Dwight, Jaime Herrera and Kenny Wanlass made up the Sailors’ quartet.

The Barons also had junior Jonathan Yu competing in the triple jump. Yu finished eighth with a mark of 45-8¾, which came on the first of his six attempts. It was his second-best mark of the season, trailing only the 47-2 he turned in to win the Orange County Championships.

Edison senior Tyler Hampton cleared the bar at 6-1 in the high jump, matching his performance in the Arcadia Invitational last season. He placed 15th.

Servite’s Max Thomas in the boys’ 100 (10.40) and 200 (20.97), Murrieta Mesa’s Cade Moran in the boys’ shot put (66-10) and discus throw (198-4), and St. Dominic Savio’s Autumn Wilson in the girls’ 100 (11.49) and 200 (23.68) joined Stevenson as multi-event winners.
