High School Roundup: Fountain Valley softball clinches at least a share of Wave League title

The Fountain Valley High School softball team defeated host Corona del Mar 25-1 Wednesday to remain unbeaten in the Wave League and earn at least a share of the league championship.

Kira Velasco, Jenna Bixler and Makenzie Butt each had four runs batted in for Fountain Valley (18-4-1, 7-0), which has won 10 games in a row.

Veronica Moore had a home run and two doubles, and Bixler and Butt also homered in the contest.

Courtney Kols struck out eight over five innings to earn the win for the Barons.

Corona del Mar is now 3-8 overall and 2-5 in league.

Newport Harbor 13, Laguna Beach 0: Ava Nolan had two hits and three runs batted in to lead the Sailors on Wednesday in a Wave League game at Laguna Beach High School.

Gabby DiFrancesco, McKayla Cotton, Sienna Schneider, Dru Stinson, Sydni Griffin and Nolan each had a double for Newport Harbor (16-5, 5-2).

Laguna Beach dropped to 0-12 overall and 0-7 in league.

Edison 5, Marina 3: Sophia Hannappel had a double and two runs batted in for the host Chargers on Wednesday in a Surf League game.

Jadyn Booth had two hits and drove in a run, and Piper Covey and Peyton Bennett each had a run batted in for Edison (6-17, 1-6), which snapped a four-game losing streak.

Marina dropped to 10-14 overall and 2-6 in league.

Huntington Beach 5, Los Alamitos 3: The Oilers used a five-run fourth inning to come away victorious on Wednesday in a Surf League game at home.

Madison Sewell had two doubles and a run batted in for Huntington Beach (16-6, 8-0). Jaylene Duarte also had a double and a run scored for the Oilers. Emma McCraw, Grace Grundstrom, Zoe Nakutis and Taylor Jackson each drove in a run.

Jordyn Pollack allowed three earned runs over 4 2/3 innings for the win on the Oilers’ senior night, while Tea Gutierrez surrendered one hit in recording the final seven outs to get the save.

Costa Mesa 17, Orange 7: Reygan Schneider had a home run, a triple and four runs batted in to lead the Mustangs over the Panthers in an Orange Coast League game at home on Wednesday.

Giselle Hernandez also drove in three runs for Costa Mesa (11-6, 6-1), which had Joseline Cruz, Caidlyn Lowry and Jaidyn Soldin score three runs apiece.

Estancia 15, Santa Ana 2 (five innings): The visiting Eagles scored multiple runs in every inning on Wednesday in an Orange Coast League game.

Estancia (7-12, 4-4) can clinch a playoff spot with a win at Orange (5-19, 2-5) on Monday.

Ocean View 7, Godinez 4: Ashley Capelouto had two hits and two runs scored to help send the Seahawks past the Grizzlies on Wednesday in a Golden West League game at home.

Sienna Erskine had two hits, a run batted in and a run scored for Ocean View (6-13, 2-5). Kaitlyn Knobbe went the distance in the pitching circle, allowing four runs (two earned) and striking out four batters.

BASEBALL

Villa Park 7, Huntington Beach 2: Gavin Grahovac hit a grand slam to lead the Spartans over the Oilers on Wednesday in a Boras Classic game at Mater Dei High School.

Geoff McArthur and Gavin Rossi also hit home runs for Villa Park (22-2).

Huntington Beach dropped to 16-8 overall.

Fountain Valley 5, Downey 2: The Barons improved to 10-14 overall with a nonleague win on Wednesday at home.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Bellflower St. John Bosco 15, Huntington Beach 6: Judah Ferrari-Cortez had two goals for the host Oilers on Wednesday in a nonleague match.

Shane Featherston, Evan Kalamian, Harrison Letournau and Taine Meteking each had one goal for Huntington Beach (6-8).

Corona del Mar 13, Los Alamitos 5: The Sea Kings won their third match in a row, improving to 13-2 overall and 3-0 in the Sunset League with Wednesday’s win at home.

Edison 17, Marina 0: The Chargers shut out the Vikings on Wednesday in a Sunset League match at Edison High School.

Edison is now 9-7 overall and 1-2 in league following the win over Marina (3-9, 0-5).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 18, Esperanza 4: The Sailors routed the Aztecs on Wednesday in a nonleague match at Davidson Field, improving to 9-8 on the season.

BOYS’ GOLF

Costa Mesa 236, Westminster 287: Senior Cristopher Rodriguez carded a two-over-par 37 to earn medalist honors for the Mustangs on Friday at Costa Mesa Country Club.

Costa Mesa (7-4 overall and in the Orange Coast League) finishes the regular season against Katella at Anaheim Hills Golf Course on Monday.

Edison 169, Laguna Beach 212: The Chargers are 13-3 overall following Wednesday’s win in a Sunset Conference crossover match at Ben Brown’s Golf Course in Laguna Beach.

Laguna Beach dropped to 0-11 on the season.

Ocean View 259, Orange 301: The Seahawks evened their Golden West League record to 5-5 with Wednesday’s win over the Panthers at River View Golf Course.
