CdM’s Jason Plumb wins first state boys’ long jump title for O.C. in nearly a century

It would be quite an understatement to say it had been a long time since an Orange County athlete had won the boys’ long jump title in the CIF State track and field championships.

Corona del Mar senior Jason Plumb broke a 97-year title drought for the county’s male athletes on Saturday at Clovis Buchanan High, and by his account of an interaction following the competition, he did not consider himself a long shot to be the one to do it.

“The first thing an official came over and said to us, he’s like, ‘Wow, what an upset,’” Plumb said. “I was going to say to him, ‘I wouldn’t consider it an upset.’

“I had the second-best jump in the state coming in, and I knew I’d be up there. I knew I’d have the chance to win it, so I wouldn’t call it an upset.”

Plumb soared to a lifetime-best mark of 24 feet, 5¾ inches (wind-aided with a tailwind of 3.9 meters per second), a jump that was matched by Santa Clarita Golden Valley’s Elijha Ellis. The first-place medal came down to the next best jump between the two of them, which was registered by Plumb at 24-¼ on his sixth and final attempt.

The list of Orange County athletes to win the boys’ long jump title at the state meet is short. Santa Ana’s Ernest Plavan won the first in 1915. Huntington Beach jumpers won it twice in a three-year span with Verden Nash (1922) and Virgil Elliot (1924). Nash won three state titles in a row in the event, winning the previous two while competing for Chino. Fullerton’s Fred Osborne won the boys’ long jump state championship in 1925, the last county athlete to accomplish that feat before Plumb.

Caroline Glessing and Jason Plumb, four-event track and field athletes at Corona del Mar High, have been excelling. They won the boys’ and girls’ long jump titles in the Orange County Championships.

“I was feeling really great on that runway,” Plumb said. “The stadium felt nice. Everything about that place felt nice. I was doing my run-throughs, the board felt great, though I wasn’t really on the board too much on any of my jumps.

“At [state] prelims, I had done that 24-1¼ without even being on the board. I was about an inch behind the board, and [in the finals], you could kind of feel the immense competition in the air. It was super cool to be there. Everybody was getting the clap going.”

Although the traveling party was light, CdM track and field coach Bill Sumner said, “We spent the night chewing our nails” because Plumb would leave distance off his jumps by not hitting the jumping board.

“He never hit the board well [Saturday] night, and he still jumped 24-5,” Sumner remarked.

As he watched Plumb finish his senior year on top, Sumner said the trials and tribulations of the Cal-bound jumper’s career flashed before his eyes. He thought of a hamstring injury in the 400-meter relay his freshman year and the COVID-19 pandemic that wiped out large parts of Plumb’s first two seasons.

“He was the leadoff leg [in the relay],” Sumner recalled. “He took off around the corner, and then I didn’t see him. I thought, ‘Shoot, he never got to the first guy to hand off.’ I said, ‘Where did he go?’ I go running over there, and he’s on the ground.

“That’s what I thought of [Saturday] night, and then it moved forward from there, so I get to [review] four years in a matter of a minute.”

Newport Harbor junior Leo Davis advanced to the state finals on Saturday, ultimately finishing tied for seventh place after clearing the bar at a height of 15-1.

The top six finishers in each event made the podium at the state meet.

Fountain Valley senior Kaho Cichon was the area’s other state meet qualifier, but her run came to an end in the preliminaries, as she placed 14th overall in the 800 meters with a time of two minutes 14.20 seconds.
