High School Roundup: Huntington Beach felled by late field goal against El Toro

Niko Castillo made a 19-yard field goal with four seconds left, sending El Toro over Huntington Beach 15-14 on Thursday in a nonleague football game at Huntington Beach High.

The Oilers had taken a 14-12 lead with just over three minutes remaining on a 10-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Nathan Tauanuu.

Huntington Beach (3-1) will wrap up its nonleague schedule against Marina in the “Oil vs. Water” rivalry game on Sept. 16 at Westminster High.

Garden Grove Santiago 22, Estancia 18: Senior running back Daniel Padilla rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns, as the host Cavaliers held off the Eagles on Thursday in a nonleague game.

Estancia (1-2) travels to take on Westminster La Quinta on Sept. 16 at Bolsa Grande High.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Huntington Beach 3, Corona del Mar 0: Taylor Ponchak had 12 kills to lead the Oilers to a straight-sets victory over the Sea Kings 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 on Thursday in a Sunset Conference crossover match at CdM.

Kylie Leopard had 11 kills, and Haylee LaFontaine added 10 kills for Huntington Beach (8-1).

Corona del Mar (14-7) had won five in a row and 11 of its previous 12 matches.

Costa Mesa 3, Estancia 0: Rosalyn Madriaga had 19 assists, seven digs, three kills and two service aces, as the visiting Mustangs swept the rival Eagles 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 on Thursday in the first meeting of the Battle for the Bell series.

Kaitlyn Yagerlener added six kills, and Reygan Schneider had five kills, seven digs and an ace for Costa Mesa (5-6, 1-2 in the Orange Coast League).

Estancia dropped to 8-3 overall and 1-2 in league. The rivals meet again at Costa Mesa on Oct. 4.

Edison 3, Laguna Beach 1: Summer Witherby paced the Chargers with 15 kills in their 25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23 win over the Breakers on Thursday in a Sunset Conference crossover match at home.

Morgan Gillinger and Molly McCluskey each had four blocks for Edison (9-10).

Eva Travis had a match-high 30 kills, and Kyra Zaengle added 17 kills and 13 digs for Laguna Beach (8-6). Grace Christian also had 40 assists and nine digs. Sara Johnson chipped in with five aces.

Santa Ana Valley 3, Los Amigos 0: Stephanie Ascencio had 11 kills to lead the visiting Falcons to a 25-21, 25-9, 25-16 sweep of the Lobos on Thursday in a nonleague game.

Newport Harbor 3, Marina 0: Laine Briggs’ 13 kills paced the Sailors in their 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 win over the Vikings on Thursday in a Sunset Conference crossover match on the road.

Anabel Kotzakov added 11 kills, and Malia Thorne had six kills for Newport Harbor (5-2).

Marina is now 10-5.

Portola 3, Ocean View 2: The Seahawks forced a decisive fifth set, but the Bulldogs came away with the 15-25, 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 15-12 win on Thursday in a nonleague match at Ocean View High.

Ocean View (3-5) is playing in the Division 2 bracket of the Dave Mohs Tournament this weekend.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Tarbut V’Torah 0: Chara Wondercheck had 10 kills to help send the Tritons over the host Lions 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 on Thursday in a San Joaquin League match.

Ava Loritz added eight kills, and Charlotte Carlson also had seven aces and five digs for Pacifica Christian (7-2, 2-1).

Sage Hill 3, Santa Ana Calvary Chapel 0: Brooke Thomassen had nine kills to lead the Lightning over the Eagles 25-15, 25-14, 25-17 on Wednesday in a nonleague match at home.

Sophie Wang had eight kills and two aces, and Cydnee Bryant contributed seven kills and three blocks.

Sage Hill (4-5) went on to sweep Woodbridge at home, 25-18, 25-19, 25-16, on Thursday. Bryant led the charge with 11 kills and three blocks. Thomassen also provided six kills and five aces, and Wang had eight kills against the Warriors.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Laguna Beach 237, Costa Mesa 243: The host Breakers edged the Mustangs on Thursday in a nonleague match at Ben Brown’s Golf Course in Laguna Beach.

Laguna Beach improved to 2-1, while Costa Mesa dropped to 2-3 this season.

St. Margaret’s 209, Estancia 299: The Tartans handed the Eagles their first loss in Orange Coast League play on Thursday at San Juan Hills Golf Club.

Estancia fell to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in league.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Ocean View 14, Costa Mesa 4: The Seahawks picked up their first win of the season on Thursday in a nonleague match at home.

Ocean View plays host to Loara on Tuesday, while Costa Mesa (2-3) takes on Godinez at home on Sept. 15.

Edison 9, San Juan Hills 9 (78-78 on games): The Chargers and Stallions played as evenly as two teams can in Thursday’s nonleague match, which ended up tied in sets and total games won, at Edison High.

Edison (2-2-1) welcomes San Clemente to its courts on Monday.

Estancia 11, Tarbut V’Torah 7: The Eagles soared over the Lions for their first win of the season on Thursday in a nonleague match at Estancia High.

Estancia (1-2) plays host to Mission Viejo on Tuesday.

Aliso Niguel 18, Laguna Beach 0: The visiting Wolverines did not drop a set on Thursday in a nonleague match at Laguna Beach High.

Laguna Beach (1-1) travels to take on Dana Hills on Tuesday.

Marina 10, Oxford Academy 8: The Vikings evened their record at 3-3 overall with a win over the Patriots at home on Thursday in nonleague play.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 12, Cerritos Valley Christian 6: The visiting Tritons doubled up the Defenders to snap their two-game losing streak in a nonleague match on Thursday.

Pacifica Christian (2-2) opens San Joaquin League play against Upland Western Christian on Sept. 16 at home.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Corona del Mar 15, Danville Monte Vista 3: The Sea Kings have strung together consecutive wins to up their record to 2-1 with Thursday’s win in a tournament opener in Santa Barbara.

Portola 14, Estancia 3: The visiting Eagles were blown out by the Bulldogs on Thursday in a nonleague match.

Estancia is now 1-1.

Beckman 15, Marina 6: The Vikings remain in search of their first win following Thursday’s nonleague defeat at the hands of the Patriots on the road.

Marina (0-2) will travel to take on Long Beach Poly on Sept. 15.

Sage Hill 9, El Modena 4: The Lightning moved to 3-0 overall with a road victory on Thursday in nonleague play.
