Local flavor in 605 All-Star Football Game

Share

The 50th edition of the 605 All-Star Football Classic at Pioneer High in Whittier will have Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley elements to it.

Edison’s Shaun Colamonico, Kenny Carmichael and Jonathan Moreida, Huntington Beach’s Derek Thomas, Jonah Apelu and Chase Elliott, and Fountain Valley’s Angel Hernandez are going to play in the game for high school seniors on Saturday at 6:05 p.m.

The seven first-team All-Sunset League members will represent the East in the game against the West.

It won’t be the last time those players play football. Each of them will continue their careers in college.

Former Edison coach Dave White said Colamonico, a wide receiver and defensive back, is going to Long Beach City College, while Carmichael, a defensive end, and Moreida, a linebacker are bound for Orange Coast College.

Fountain Valley coach Jimmy Nolan said Hernandez, an outside linebacker, is heading to NCAA Division II Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma.

Huntington Beach coach Brett Brown said Thomas, a defensive end, is going to Cerritos College, Apelu, a noseguard, to Golden West College, and Elliott, a linebacker, to Santa Barbara City College.

Another local in the game is Huntington Beach resident Blake Hehl, who played defensive end at Orange Lutheran.

There were two locals — Ocean View’s Chase Foreman and Costa Mesa’s Roman Ayala — who were selected, but won’t be able to play because of varying reasons.

Ocean View coach Luis Nunez said Foreman, a first-team All-Golden West League defensive back, would be enrolling at NCAA Division III Aurora University in Illinois at the time. Costa Mesa coach Glen Fisher said Ayala, a first-team All-Orange Coast League member, pulled out because of transportation issues.

“I am disappointed due the fact I was the co-defensive MVP of that game in 1979,” said Fisher, who represented Downey Warren in the 605 All-Star Game. “[I] would have loved to watch him play.”

Ray Fenton, the former coach at Fountain Valley, is coaching the East. Fenton led Los Alamitos to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs last year.

Edison’s Battle at the Beach

The 19th annual Battle at the Beach seven-on-seven passing tournament is returning to Edison on July 8, and once again, it will feature many of the top football programs in Southern California.

Among the 20-team field are the CIF Southern Section Division 1 finalists from a year ago, Bellflower St. John Bosco and Mater Dei, as well as semifinalist Corona Centennial. Those three programs have talented quarterbacks.

Mater Dei incoming junior J.T. Daniels has offers from Alabama, Arizona State, BYU, Cal, Colorado, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Stanford, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC, Washington, Washington State and Wisconsin.

Re-Al Mitchell, an Iowa State commit, is going into his senior year at St. John Bosco, while Centennial incoming senior Tanner McKee has 21 offers.

Don’t forget about Edison quarterback Griffin O’Connor, who last month helped the Chargers go undefeated at the Dana Hills AirStrike tournament and win the San Juan Hills Gunslinger tournament. O’Connor has an offer from UNLV, as well as four from NCAA Football Championship Subdivision programs, Ivy League schools Columbia, Cornell and Dartmouth, and one from Sacramento State.

The rest of the schools at the Battle at the Beach include Mission Hills Alemany, La Puente Bishop Amat, Los Angeles Cathedral, Covina Charter Oak, Garden Serra, Newhall Hart, JSerra, La Habra, Los Angeles Loyola, San Marcos Mission Hills, Harbor City Narbonne, Westlake Village Oaks Christian, Eastvale Roosevelt, Lancaster Paraclete, Valencia and Servite.

Estancia hires new girls’ volleyball coach

Rick Reeve is the new girls’ volleyball coach at Estancia, said Nate Goellrich, an athletic director at the school.

Reeve takes over for Matt Carlin, who lasted one year. Under Carlin, the Eagles finished in fourth place in the Orange Coast League at 5-5, and they lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs.

“We are excited about this hire and feel Rick is a great fit for our girls’ volleyball program,” Goellrich said of Reeve, who owns and coaches the Beach Elite Volleyball Club in Huntington Beach. “He has a lot of energy and passion for the sport of volleyball. He has shown the ability to develop and build a strong program with his Beach Elite program.”

OC All-Star Baseball Game

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim’s 50th Orange County All-Star Baseball Game for seniors is on Tuesday at La Palma Park’s Dee Fee Field in Anaheim at 6:30 p.m.

The locals who made the South team are Sage Hill pitcher Brett Super, who’s going to Pomona-Pitzer College, Newport Harbor outfielder Cade Seabold, Fountain Valley catcher Justin Mazzone, who’s heading to Seattle University, and outfielder Trent Sievers, who’s bound for Long Beach State, and Laguna Beach third baseman Dante Faicchio. Marina’s Tyler Mills is on the North.

Corona del Mar coach John Emme is one of the assistants on the South team.

No All-Star Game for Huntington Beach’s Danner and Pratto

With Huntington Beach seniors Hagen Danner and Nick Pratto most likely going in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft on June 12, coach Benji Medure said the two would not take part in the Ryan Lemmon Senior Showcase game between the Sunset League and Trinity League on June 10.
