High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ volleyball wins Tesoro Tournament

Senior setter Joe Karlous earned MVP honors after leading the Newport Harbor High boys’ volleyball team to a 25-22, 25-22 sweep over Tesoro in a best-of-three Gold Division final of the Tesoro Tournament on Monday.

For the tournament, Karlous, a Pepperdine University commit, totaled 110 assists, 10 digs, four blocks and two service aces.

Jack Higgs made the all-tournament team for the Sailors (6-0), who defeated Edison 25-21, 25-22 in the semifinals. Higgs finished with 35 kills in the tournament.

Laguna Beach 2, Yorba Linda 1: The Breakers (4-2) won the Tesoro Tournament Silver Division title with Monday’s 15-25, 25-21, 15-13 win.

BASEBALL

Marina 3, El Modena 2: Braden Wylde’s drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, leading the host Vikings to a walk-off win in Monday’s consolation game at the Loara Tournament.

Austin Hallman scored the game-winning run after he doubled in the seventh.

Troy Kent hit a two-run homer in the fifth for Marina (1-1), while Matt Wilson struck out four and allowed five hits and one earned run in 5 1/3 innings.

The Vikings play Villa Park in the tournament on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

Newport Harbor 4, Esperanza 3: Kelly Austin threw a complete game, striking out 10 and giving up three runs and two hits for the Sailors in Monday’s Newport Elks Tournament Foothill Division game at home.

John Olmstead’s solo home run gave Newport Harbor a 4-3 lead.

Austin went one for two with two runs batted in for the Sailors (2-0), who continue tournament play at Montebello Schurr on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Braham Duncan was one for two.

Edison 11, Loara 1: Kevin Hultgren improved to 1-1 after scattering six hits and one run over five innings while striking out seven in the Chargers’ home game in the Loara Tournament on Monday.

Relievers Ian Anderson and Josh Martin threw scoreless innings for Edison (2-2), which plays Long Beach Wilson at Glover Stadium on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Blake Morton went two for two with two RBIs and a walk.
