Irrelevant Week to take place June 29-July 1 in Newport Beach

Share

Irrelevant Week this year will actually be a two-day celebration, not a weeklong event. But, as founder Paul Salata would like to say, “that’s irrelevant.”

Chad Kelly, the Denver Broncos quarterback who was the final pick of the NFL Draft in April, will be the center of attention June 29 through July 1 in Newport Beach.

Kelly, Mr. Irrelevant XLII, is scheduled to arrive in Orange County on the night of June 29. Irrelevant Week organizers invite the public to welcome Kelly upon his arrival at John Wayne Airport in the Terminal B baggage claim area at 8:30 p.m.

Kelly is on the mend from a recent wrist surgery and also suffered a torn right ACL and lateral meniscus in November. But his Irrelevant Week experience will begin with some exercise. He’ll go for a spin session at Grit Cycle in Costa Mesa at 7 a.m. on June 30.

The Lowsman Banquet, Irrelevant Week’s signature event, will take place later that day at 6:30 p.m. at Balboa Bay Club. Kelly, the nephew of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, will be roasted and toasted during the event where he’ll receive the Lowsman Trophy. The “award” features a player fumbling a football.

Kelly’s final day in Newport Beach on July 1 begins with the “Balboa Peninsula Bronco Beach Bash” at 30th Street at 10 a.m. Kelly will be on the sand and interacting with fans, as well as families from SPIN (Serving People In Need).

Fans will have another chance to bid farewell to Kelly at 1 p.m. on the patio at the A&O Kitchen + Bar at Balboa Bay Club. The event will be a meet and greet with Kelly, who will also receive gifts from local companies.

Kelly is one of the most intriguing players to take on the moniker Mr. Irrelevant. Kelly, who began at Clemson before going through junior college and on to Mississippi, had a huge year in 2015 for the Rebels with wins over Alabama, Auburn and LSU. He threw for 4,042 yards, and 31 touchdown passes. He also rushed for 500 yards and 10 TDs on his way to first-team All-Southeastern Conference honors.
