SAN LUIS OBISPO — Garrett Hartwell went two for three with one run batted to help the Pirates complete a three-game nonconference sweep Saturday.

Zach Chavez went one for four with two RBIs for OCC (3-0). Starter Mitch Maltby struck out four and allowed two hits in six innings. Brian O’Keefe, who allowed two hits in one inning, earned the win. The Pirates overcame a 3-2 deficit with four runs in the eighth inning and another run in the ninth. They scored the four runs in the eighth on two outs highlighted by a two-run single by Chavez.

Doubleheader

HAYWARD — Vanguard split with Cal State East Bay winning the seven-inning nightcap, 7-1, in nonconference action Saturday.

Tyson Leighton went three for four for the Lions (4-3) in the first game that Vanguard lost, 3-1.

The Lions’ Jeremiah Mejia went two for two with runs batted in, two walks and two runs scored in the win.

Cal State East Bay is 1-2.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Biola 68, Vanguard 55

COSTA MESA — Molly Pfohl scored 15 points to lead the No. 13-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Sarah Boyd finished with 12 points and 12 assists for Vanguard (13-7, 9-5 in conference).

No. 8-ranked Biola is 18-5, 10-4.

Cal State Northridge 82, UC Irvine 72

IRVINE — Mikah Maly-Karros scored 27 points to lead the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday at Bren Events Center.

Maly-Karros, who was nine for 21 from the field, tied with the Matadors’ Jasmine Erving for the game’s top scorer.

Jade Smith-Williams scored 27 points for UCI (13-9, 5-5 in conference).

Cal State Northridge is 2-21, 2-8. The Matadors shot 14 for 20 from the field in the second half (70%) to pull away from a 36-33 halftime lead.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Biola 75, Vanguard 73 (OT)

COSTA MESA — Alex Chapman had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Christopher Raybon and Taylor Kelly added 12 points each, while Chris Pynch and Drew Bruns had 10 points each for Vanguard (5-17, 3-11 in conference).

Biola (20-4, 10-4) outscored Vanguard, 43-36, in the second half, and 11-9, in overtime.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Ohio State def. UC Irvine

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Carson Clark had 23 kills and nine digs to lead the No. 7-ranked Anteaters in the nonconference match at Rec Hall on the Penn State campus.

No. 9-ranked Ohio State (6-2) won, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-8.

Cory Yoder finished with 20 kills and Anthony Spittle amassed 53 assists for UCI (5-7).

COSTA MESA — Vanguard was swept by Redlands, 6-5, and, 5-1, in nonconference action Saturday.

Brittany Colenzo went two for three with a run scored for the Lions (3-4) in the first game that went nine innings. Amanda Young went two for three for Vanguard in the nightcap.

Redlands is 2-0.
