Breakers baseball still No. 5

The Laguna Beach baseball team continued its hold on the CIF Southern Section Division 4 rankings, coming in at No. 5 for a second straight week. Bishop Amat also held down the top spot for the second week in a row. The rest of the top 10 is Palm Desert, Oaks Christian, Torrance, Laguna Beach, Chino, Indio, Colony, La Quinta/La Quinta, Troy and San Dimas. Colony and San Dimas are new to the poll, replacing La Quinta/La Quinta and Nogales.

In boys’ tennis, Laguna again is ranked third in a Division 4 poll. Viewpoint is ranked first and is followed by Paramount, Laguna, Santa Ynez, Dunn, La Quinta/Westminster, Segerstom, Linfield Christian, Buckley and Santa Clara.

Laguna’s boys’ volleyball team also remained status quo at No. 2 in the Division 2 poll. Corona del Mar again is No. 1. Taking spots three-through-10 are Valencia/Valencia, Oak Park, Trabuco Hills, Oaks Christian, Beckman, San Luis Obispo, El Toro and Aliso Niguel.

Morrissey 29th in snowboarding event

Defending overall champion Mike Morrissey of Laguna Beach finished 29th at Saturday’s snowboarding competition, the first of three events that make up the 4th annual Ultimate Boarder Championship. Chas Gouldemond (Reno, Nev.), the favorite to capture the snowboarding title, did so by coming from behind on his final run to overtake Trevor Jacob (Mammoth Lakes) on his final run.

The week-long competition pits some of the top pro and amateur snowboarders, surfers and skaters† against each other in three competitions. The surf competition was held Thursday at Seaside Reef at Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Results weren’t available at press time. Skateboarding, the final competition, and an awards ceremony are Saturday at the Seaside Reef parking lot.

The first-place prize is $30,000.
