SANTA BARBARA — Cody Caldwell had 26 kills, two aces and seven digs to lead Newport Harbor High past rival Corona del Mar, 25-22, 25-13, 25-17, in the quarterfinals Friday.

Rusty Sary added 14 kills and Ian Sequeira had 37 assists and two blocks for Newport Harbor (16-6), which will face Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach in the semifinals Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

The Sailors beat Long Beach Wilson in the first round, 25-14, 19-25, 25-15, 25-16. Sary led Newport Harbor with 16 kills, eight digs and two aces, while Caldwell had 15 kills and nine digs. Sequeira had 39 assists and nine digs, while Kevin Rakestraw had eight kills and Clay Carr had five kills for the Saiors, ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll.

CdM (17-3) defeated Palisades in the first round, 25-14, 25-14, 25-18. Parker Brown had eight kills, while Jack Reed and Spencer Haly had seven kills each. Evan Dean had six kills, Nick Curci had 18 asssits and Joe Ctvrtlik had 13 assists.

Reed led the Sea Kings with nine kills in the loss to the Sailors. Haly added eight kills.

Corona del Mar, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division II poll, will face Valencia in a fifth-place semifinal match Saturday at 9 a.m.

Sea Kings Coach Steve Conti was impressed with Caldwell’s performance in the quarterfinals.

“There’s no question in my mind that Cody is the best player in CIF, all divisions,” Conti said.
