Briefs: Sea Kings reunited

Eric Eadington, a Corona del Mar High product pitching in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, was promoted Tuesday from Single-A Rancho Cucamonga to the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts.

Through Monday, Eadington had 18 saves, a 1-1 record and a 3.27 earned-run average in 31 appearances, all in relief, for the Quakes. HE had allowed 29 hits and struck out 33 in 33 innings and was holding opponents to a .245 batting average.

Eadington, who played collegiately at Harvard, began the season with the Great Lakes Loons of the Single-A Midwest League. At Great Lakes, he had five saves and was 1-0 in 11 games with 27 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound left-hander had seven saves in his last 10 appearances at Rancho Cucamonga.

At Chattanooga, Eadington, 22, is reunited with former CdM teammate Jake Lemmerman.

Lemmerman, a 23-year-old shortstop, was hitting .233 in 279 at-bats for the Lookouts through Monday. Lemmerman had four home runs, 20 runs batted in, 18 doubles and was eight for eight in stolen-base attempts.

Chattanooga entered Tuesday in first place in the Southern League’s North Division.

Hauser promoted

Matt Hauser, who pitched at Orange Coast College and Corona del Mar High, was promoted Friday from Single-A Fort Myers of the Florida State League to Double-A New Britain of the Eastern League.

Hauser, who ended his collegiate career at San Diego, made his 2012 debut for the New Britain Rock Cats on Sunday, throwing two relief innings. He allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out one.

At Fort Myers, the Minnesota Twins prospect was 4-2 with a 2.88 earned-run average in 31 appearances, including six starts. In 72 innings, he allowed 60 hits, struck out 58 and walked 28. Opponents were hitting .226 against him.

Hauser ended the 2011 season at New Britain, where he made just one appearance.

UCI picked second

Junior forward Natalie Ledezma and sophomore midfielder Cami Privett earned preseason All-Big West Conference honors for UC Irvine, a two-time-defending regular-season women’s soccer champion that was picked to finish second in 2012 by conference coaches.

UCI received one of 10 first-place votes with the other nine going to Long Beach State. UCI accumulated 86 points in the voting, 13 behind Long Beach State.

Cal State Fullerton (71 points) was third, followed in order of projected finish by Cal State Northridge (69), UC Santa Barbara (53), and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (48).

UC Davis and Pacific tied for the No. 7 spot (44), while UC Riverside and Hawaii, a new entry into the conference, shared the No. 9 spot (18).

Ledezma, a transfer from UCLA, led the Anteaters with 12 goals and eight assists last season, when she posted three game-winning goals on her way to earning first-team all-conference recognition in 2011.

Privett, a second-team All-Big West selection, was Freshman of the Year after posting five goals and five assists in her debut season.

UCI finished 14-4-3 last season, when it lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Coach Scott Juniper’s squad was 6-1-1 in conference play, edging Long Beach State (6-2).

But the 49ers defeated UCI, 1-0, in the conference tournament final, their second straight Big West Tournament crown, and reached the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. Long Beach’s 18-6-1 record set a school record for single-season wins.

Long Beach State is led by senior Nadia Link, Offensive Player of the Year in the conference last season, when she led the conference in goals (16) and assists (10) and earned third-team All-American recognition.

UCI will also have returning senior defender Sarah Devine, a first-team all-conference performer as a junior.

Long Beach State is also lifted by the presence of senior defender Alex Balcer, a preseason all-conference choice who was a first-team All-Big West honoree as a junior.

Jordan Nelson, a senior defender for the 49ers, was a second-team all-conference pick last season.

UCI opened practice Wednesday in preparation for their Aug. 17 season opener against BYU at UCI.

The Anteaters play Long Beach State on Oct. 20 at the 49ers field.

UCI’s Thurman honored

UC Irvine baseball pitcher Andrew Thurman was named Cape Cod League Pitcher of the Week after striking out 13 in a three-hit shutout for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox on July 22.

Thurman, a first-team All-Big West Conference honoree as a sophomore in 2012, followed up his shutout by striking out seven in 6 1/3 innings and allowing four hits in a 1-0 loss to the Cotuit Kettleers on Sunday.

Thurman, who will be a junior for the Anteaters in 2013, is 3-3 with a 3.50 earned-run average in his second season in the Cape. He has 45 strikeouts in 36 innings to rank tied for fourth in the league. He is one behind two pitchers tied for second.
