Season openers a success for local youth teams

Five Huntington Beach teams got their respective 2012 Pop Warner Football seasons off to a successful start by picking up victories Saturday. .

Huntington Beach teams enter the second week of the regular season Saturday.

Mighty Mite Division

Green Chargers 13, Tustin 6: Huntington spotted Tustin a 6-0 lead but shut down the Black Cobras the rest of the way at Marina High.

Tustin took the opening kickoff and marched down for the game’s first score, but Huntington came right back when quarterback Ryan Easterday and Carson Chalabian combined on a scoring pass play. Joey Valenta ran in the extra point for what turned out to be the game-winning point.

The Green Chargers created several turnovers and dominated the second half, and their defense capped the scoring when Connor Provost returned a fumble for the clinching touchdown.

Next game: 2 p.m. Saturday at Santa Margarita Blue Eagles.

Gold Chargers 20, La Habra 12: Running back Jackson Walters scored on runs of one, 24 and 24 yards as the Gold Lions defeated the Blue Lions at Marina High.

Outside linebacker Ivan Soto had an interception and first-year players Roman Dimaggio, Kaleb Marshall and William Burke were team captains for the game.

Next game: 11 a.m. Saturday, at Fullerton Titans.

Junior Pee Wee Division

Huntington 33, Santa Margarita 0: The Green Chargers rushed for five scores and the defense got a shutout on opening day in routing the Red Titans at Edison High.

Nicholas Upstill and Sammy Rovano both scored on long runs and Cameron Eden, Tanner Nelson and Noah Fernandez also rushed for touchdowns. Upstill caught three passes, two of which came on two-point conversion attempts.

The Huntington defense was led by Trent Fletcher, Mateo Lopez, Jack Horton, Nate Scott and Christian Prado.

Next game: 9 a.m. Saturday, vs. Santa Margarita Eagles (Edison High).

Pee Wee Division

Huntington 22, Hacienda/La Puente 6: Running back Parker Thomas turned in two long scoring runs and defensive lineman Jackson Weddle had a key tackle for negative yardage, as the Green Chargers downed the Phantoms at Edison High.

Next game: 1 p.m. Saturday, vs. Santa Margarita Mustangs (Edison High).

Junior Midget Division

Green Chargers 28, Pasadena 8: Huntington used a strong run game and a defense that came up with three turnovers to down the host Gold Trojans at Pasadena.

Daniel Serrano, David Atencio, Chase Ault and Griffin O’Connor scored touchdowns for the Green Chargers. Defensively, Dylan Alcantara had two interceptions and Jon Morieda recovered a fumble.

Next Game: 8 a.m. Saturday, vs. Brea Bengals (Edison High).

Tustin 32, Gold Chargers 12: Tyler Lee rushed for one touchdown and caught another for Huntington in its loss to the Gold Cobras at Edison High.
