High School Roundup: Laguna boys’ tennis owns top spot in league

The Laguna Beach High boys’ tennis team went to 2-0 against Orange Coast League competition on Tuesday by taking a 13-5 match from host Costa Mesa.

Matt Meisberger swept (6-0, 6-1, 6-0), Noah Radach won two games (6-3, 4-6, 6-0), and Jeff Spitz scored one point (2-6, 0-6, 6-2) in singles action. Costa Mesa defaulted the second and third lines in doubles play, giving all three Laguna teams two wins: Oliver Nasiell/Ryan Gee (4-6, 6-0 def., 6-0 def.); Andrew Koumas/Jared Boetes (4-6, 6-0, 6-0), and Alex Duong/Morgan Lebby (6-0, 6-0, 6-0).

The Breakers, the league’s reigning champion, had started league play on March 21 and defeated host Godinez, 14-4. Lebby and Teague Hamilton each took one win in singles play and the pair was subbed by Radach (one point) and Boetes (two points). All three doubles teams, Gee/Oliver Nasiell, No. 2 Duong/Owen Weber, and Meisberger/Koumas at No. 3, swept their matches.

Laguna also played a nonleague match March 19 against Dana Hills and lost to the Division 1 Dolphins, 14-4. Hamilton (injury) didn’t play, but Lebby took two of three games and doubles teams Gee/Nasiell and Weber/Duong also won one of three games each.

Laguna took on Saddleback Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The Breakers are out of action until April 9. They’ll play host to Estancia at 3 p.m. to begin the second round of league play.

Boys’ Golf

The Breakers scored a 205-244 Orange Coast League victory on Tuesday over visiting Coast Mesa at Aliso Creek Inn and Golf Course (Ben Browns, par 32). Mitch Wills shot a team low 37 for the Breakers.

Laguna returned Wednesday to the Ben Browns course and improved to 2-3 in league and 4-8 overall by scoring a 190-200 win against Calvary Chapel. Wills and teammates John Grayden and Troy Sullivan each shot 37

Following spring break next week, the Breakers return to the links for a 2:30 p.m. match against Estancia at Mesa Verde Golf Course.

Swimming

Several Laguna athletes and two relay teams turned in CIF qualifying times during the Mission Viejo Invitational on Saturday . Erik Juliusson established school record times in the boys’ 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle at the invite.

CIF times for the Laguna girls’ team: 200 medley relay team (1:59.22); Sydney Saxe (200 free, 2:06.74); Kirra Nash (200 free, 2:12.70); Maggie Renner (50 free, 27.20); Lila Vera (50 free, 25.07; 100 butterfly, 59.15); Daniela Lucidi (500 free, 5:43.77); Ally Jochim (100 breaststroke, 1:17.09); Faith Hale (100 free, 58.74); Natalie Selin (100 butterfly, 1:09.23); Mackenzie Baldridge (500 free, 5:30.07; 200 free, 2:04.88).

Boys’ times: 200 free relay team (1:35.35); Henry White (200 IM, 2:20.17); Erik Juliusson (200 IM, 1:57.78; 500 free, 4:43.19); Cameron Karkoska (100 breaststroke, 1:04.62; 200 IM, 2:05.33); Trevor Collins (500 free, 5:27.46); Caleb Scott (100 breaststroke, 1:07.71).

The Breakers are off next week for spring break. They resume their league schedule on April 10 at home against Calvary Chapel at 3:15 p.m.

Softball

The Breakers dropped a nonleague doubleheader last Saturday at JSerra, losing 10-0 and 15-5.

Laguna (3-15) is idle through spring break. The Breakers start their Orange Coast League season on April 9 hosting Saddleback at 4 p.m. at Thurston Middle School.

Laguna Beach senior Drake Martinez has been nominated for a spot on the South team for the Brea Lions Orange County North-South All-Star Football Game. The annual contest, for graduating seniors, is June 28 at Orange Coast College.

Final rosters will be announced in April.
