The Corona del Mar Middle School seventh-grade girls’ soccer team won the Coast Athletic League championship, capping off its season with a 3-0 victory over Sowers on Thursday.

CdM came out strong and fast against a very physical Sowers, pressuring its defense by keeping the ball in front of the Sowers goal.

Midfielder Emery Rolfes scored the first goal just minutes into the game on a perfect cross by Liz Lamie. Just before halftime, Julie Bartz nudged the ball into the goal off a well-placed free kick by Parker Hoffman.

The third goal was a hard, high shot by Maddie Tumbarello in the last six minutes of the game.

CdM Goalie Sarah Duarte was tested but made numerous tough saves to ensure a clean sheet.

Sowers couldn’t find the net, despite several opportunities on breakaways.

The victory was particularly sweet for CdM, who lost to both Dwyer and Sowers during the season, and came back to beat Dwyer in the semifinals and Sowers in the championship game.

The stellar defense was anchored by Sami Colleran, Blakely Beauchamp and Ashley Maloney. Midfielders Cassidy Brown, Brianna Taylor, Caroline Casey, Libby Fitch, Nicole Harr and Mackenzie Murphy ensured CdM had the advantage with ball possession. Forwards Emily Faludy, Ava McKenzie and Riley Sidebotham kept the pressure on the Sowers keeper.

The team was coached by CdM High JV Coach Nicole Brannigan and CdM High varsity coach Bryan Middleton.
