Share

Estancia High senior Marlene Calderon, a key defender for the league champion Eagles, is the Orange Coast League MVP in girls’ soccer.

Calderon, a center back, routinely marked the best player on the opponent’s team. Calderon, bound for Golden West College, helped Estancia (10-3-11, 4-0-6 in league) win the outright league title by going through the 10-game schedule undefeated.

She was joined on the first-team all-league by Estancia sophomore midfielder Alba Barrios, sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Leahy, sophomore forward Alondra Guzman and senior defender Shantel Romero. Costa Mesa sophomore center back Citlaly Gomez was also a first-team selection for the second straight year.

Barrios had five goals and a team-best 12 assists for the Eagles. Leahy, a two-year starter in goal, made 107 saves and gave up just three goals in league. Guzman had four goals, including two in a big 2-0 victory over Godinez.

Estancia juniors Jackie Hubbard and Haley Flores, as well as sophomore Sarah Leahy, were second-team all-league honorees for Estancia. Hubbard led the Eagles with 10 goals. Costa Mesa junior Johanna Hernandez also earned second-team honors.

The Mustangs finished 1-8-1 in league.
