Boys’ Basketball: Mesa’s Hefner on All-Orange Coast League first team

Costa Mesa High junior guard Kyle Hefner is a first-team All-Orange Coast League performer in boys’ basketball.

Hefner led the Mustangs (10-17, 5-5 in league) to a share of third place in league and the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs. He averaged 13.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game.

Costa Mesa junior guard Sean Comer, who averaged 12.1 points, 3.3 assists and three rebounds per game, made the second team, along with Estancia junior guard Josh Mendoza and senior guard Ben Beck.

Mendoza and Beck helped the Eagles (7-20, 3-7 in league) make the Division 3A playoffs as an at-large entry. Estancia placed fifth in league.

Mendoza averaged 17.1 points per game, tops in the area. He shot 86% from the free-throw line (65 of 76), 46% from the field (158 of 345) and 45% from behind the three-point line (63 of 141). His 63 threes tied him for the 10th best total in Orange County.

Beck was the Eagles’ second-leading scorer at 13.1 points per game.

Laguna Beach’s Cole Kesler was the Orange Coast League MVP. He shared it last season.
