Brink leads the way as Pirates sweep

Orange Coast def. Palomar

COSTA MESA — Johannes Brink had a match-high 23 kills as the Pirates won the Pacific Coast Conference match, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21, on Friday night.

Cody Martin added 12 kills for OCC (10-5, 6-3 in conference), and Austin Bagby had 10. Scott Enos had a team-high eight digs, and Brendan Duff dished out 45 assists.

Nick Supple led Palomar (2-14, 1-8) with 10 kills.

OCC plays at Grossmont on Wednesday.

MEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 9, Arizona Christian 0

COSTA MESA — Stefan Kilchhofer and Daymon Johnson each won in singles and combined to win at No. 1 doubles for the Lions in Friday’s Golden State Athletic Conference match at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

The doubles teams of Roger Muri and Yahor Kryvaruchka, as well as Robin Wagner and Lukas Larsson, also won for Vanguard. Each player also won in singles.

No. 3 Vanguard improved to 19-0, 10-0 in conference. Next up is the GSAC Tournament, beginning April 11 at Indian Wells.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 8, Arizona Christian 1

COSTA MESA — Vanguard swept in singles in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Friday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Juliet Labarthe, Nina Pudar, Michaele Sullivan, Gabriele Alford, Melanie Parker and Anita Taranto all won in singles. The doubles teams of Labarthe and Sullivan, as well as Alford and Pudar, also were victorious.

No. 12 Vanguard improved to 9-14, 5-5 in conference. The Lions next play at the GSAC Tournament, beginning April 11 at Indian Wells.

BASEBALL

The Master’s 4, Vanguard 1

SANTA CLARITA — Bryce Arroyo, Ellis Whitman and Taylor McKnight each had two hits for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday at The Master’s.

Vanguard fell to 16-22, 9-16 in conference.

A.J. Work allowed no earned runs in eight innings to pick up the win for The Master’s (30-11, 20-8).

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

RIVERSIDE — Vanguard swept the nonconference doubleheader at La Sierra, winning the opener, 10-2, and the nightcap, 7-3.

Taylor Hallahan was three for four with three runs batted in for Vanguard in the opener. Gabrielle Jackson was two for three, and also had three RBIs. Rachel Stalford got the win, pitching two shutout innings in relief.

Kari Bergerson was three for three with a double and three RBIs in the second game. Brittney Boggs had a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Taylor Doyle got the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits in four innings.

Vanguard also lost a resumed game against La Sierra, 5-4. The game had been suspended due to darkness after six innings on Feb. 18, with La Sierra leading by the same 5-4 score.

Bergerson, Boggs and Adriana Venezia each had two hits in that game for Vanguard (29-17).
