High School Roundup: Breakers bond in Hawaii

The Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball team got back into the swing of things in Orange Coast League competition Tuesday when it took on visiting Godinez.

The Breakers, just a few days removed from a return flight from Hawaii, where they participated in the Kamehameha Cup, showed no signs of jet lag as they polished off the Grizzlies, 25-15, 25-15, 26-24.

Senior middle blocker Maxx McCarter and junior outside hitter Lucas Capobianco had eight and seven kills, respectively, and junior setter JP Wollam and senior setter Grifan Fair had 22 and 13 assists, respectively, for the Breakers who improved to 4-0 in league and 11-6 overall.

Godinez went to 2-2 in league and 8-9 overall.

“It was great to see us jump out to a good start after traveling to Hawaii, and not practicing for a week,” Laguna Coach Scott Panaro said. “The first two games, we played with a purpose and sense of urgency.

“Godinez plays with a lot of pride and wasn’t about to give up. Our guys came out a little sluggish and made several unforced errors that gave Godinez the lead through much of Game 3. Jake Hexberg came off the bench late and had a few key kills to secure the win.”

Hexberg had three kills and a team-high eight digs.

Laguna went 2-3, overall, at the Kamehameha Cup. They defeated both Maryknoll (25-20, 25-19) and Hawaii Baptist (25-22, 27-25), and lost to Waiakea (25-17, 27-25), Kamehameha Kapalama (25-17, 25-19), and Highland of Arizona (27-26, 26-24).

“This was an amazing trip,” Panaro said. “The team had an incredible experience and got to experience many of the wonders Oahu has to offer. We were up early every morning and played in the afternoons. We tried to get the most out of our time on the island.

“The boys did a great job of switching gears from beach mode to playing competitive volleyball. We had a few moments that looked like we were still mentally at the beach and could have performed at a higher level, but our team became better friends and a more cohesive unit. It was great to spend time with the boys outside of the gym and see other sides of their personalities. We are already discussing going back next year.”

Laguna played an OCL match Thursday against Costa Mesa. The score wasn’t available at press time. The Breakers next play at Saddleback at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Swimming

The Breakers won both Orange Coast League varsity meets against visiting Calvary Chapel Wednesday. The girls’ team downed the Eagles, 131-24, and the boys’ team posted a 117-53 win.

Laguna, now 3-0 in league action, host Godinez at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Track and Field

Jack Crawford won his boys’ varsity 3,200 meters feature race, and sister, Janie, won her heat in the girls’ varsity 400 meters, at the Irvine Distance Carnival on Saturday.

Jack Crawford won in a time of 10 minutes 3.95 seconds. He finished more than two seconds ahead of second-place Sergio Flores of San Clemente who ran a 10:06.01.

Janie Crawford turned in a time of 59.95 seconds to win the first of two heats in the girls’ 400 meters. Second place went to Saniya Syed of Beckman (1:00.40).

Boys’ Tennis

The Breakers suffered a rare Orange Coast League loss Tuesday when they were edged, 10-8, by visiting Estancia.

Laguna swept at No. 1 singles as Morgan Lebby won by scores of 6-2, 6-2, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Teague Hamilton won two his two sets (6-0, 6-1) and Zach Pratto subbed in for the third set, a 6-1 loss.

Doubles player Ryan Gee did not play due to injury.

The Breakers played a nonleague match against Laguna Hills Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time. Next week, the Breakers host Palm Springs in a 3 p.m. nonleague match on Thursday.

Boys’ Golf

The Breakers’ John Grayden and Troy Sullivan were low medalists at 42 Tuesday, but Estancia was able to score a 212-229 Orange Coast League victory at Mesa Verde Golf Course (par 36).

Laguna, 2-5 in league and 4-9 overall, played against Costa Mesa Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time. The Breakers resume play on April 24 against Estancia at 2:30 p.m. at Aliso Viejo Country Club.

Football

Drake Martinez, the 2012 Orange Coast League Most Valuable Player, and an All-CIF Southern Section Southern Division honoree, is one of 36 senior players selected to the South roster for the Brea Lions Club Orange County North-South Prep All-Star Football Game. The 54th annual contest starts at 7:15 p.m. on June 28 at Orange Coast College’s LeBard Stadium.

Martinez is one of six players listed at defensive back for the South team which will be coached by Scott Meyer of Corona del Mar. The North is coached by Fred DiPalma of Katella.

The game’s players and coaches were selected by the Orange County Sportswriters Assn.
