College Roundup: UCI women’s tennis clinches at least share of Big West regular-season title

UC Irvine 4, Cal State Fullerton 0

IRVINE — The host Anteaters earned at least a share of the Big West Conference regular-season title by improving to 19-3, 8-0 in conference on Tuesday.

Marivick Mamit (No. 2), Sarah Gong (No. 4) and Sarah Standfelt (No. 6) finished off straight-set singles wins for UCI.

Cal State Fullerton is 10-13, 3-5.

UCI plays host to Hawaii on Sunday at noon.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Long Beach def. Orange Coast

LONG BEACH — Cody Martin led the Pirates with 11 kills in a quarterfinal match of the 2013 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Men’s Volleyball State Championship Tuesday.

Long Beach, the No. 2 seed, advanced to the state semifinals with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-22 win.

The defending state champion Vikings (15-3) are two wins away from capturing the college’s ninth state championship.

Johannes Brink and Austin Bagby added nine kills while Brendan Duff totaled 21 assists to go with four blocks for OCC (12-7).

BASEBALL

Riverside 5, Orange Coast 4

COSTA MESA — Freshman left fielder Cody Bruder went three for four with two runs batted in, but the host Pirates lost ground in their attempt to defend their Orange Empire Conference title on Tuesday.

OCC (21-11, 9-8 in conference), ranked No. 2 in Southern California, is four games behind Fullerton with four conference games remaining. The Pirates are in a three-way tie for third with Cypress and Saddleback, one game behind second-place Riverside.

Zach Nehrir went two for five with one RBI for OCC, for which David Wilson allowed four runs on seven hits in 7 1.3 innings.

OCC visits Saddleback on Thursday at 2 p.m.

UC Irvine 2, Cal State Northridge 0

IRVINE — Junior starting pitcher Andrew Morales threw seven shutout innings and senior Ronnie Shaeffer was two for three with two doubles and a run batted in to help the host Anteaters win the rubber game of the Big West Conference series on Sunday.

Morales allowed six hits, struck out six and walked two to improve to 8-0. He has now posted 14 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

UCI improved to 23-9, 5-4 in the Big West.

The Matadors dropped to 19-17, 5-4.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Fresno State Lexus Classic

FRESNO — UC Irvine freshman Luciane Lee finished in second place to pace the Anteaters at the Copper River Country Club Tuesday.

Lee shot a 54-hole score of 215 (70-71-74) and led the Anteaters with a personal-best second-place finish. Long Beach State’s Simone Hoey earned medalist honors (211).

UCI finished fourth with a three round total of 903 (301-300-302). Long Beach State captured the title (892) followed by Tulsa (893) and San Jose State (896).

UCI senior Michelle Park finished in a tie for 22nd (227-75-73-79), while junior Sara Banke was tied for 29th (229-78-76-75), sophomore Brenna Carlson was tied for 45th (233-78-80-75) and junior Ronnie Valerio was tied for 64th (240-80-82-78).

The Anteaters will compete in the Big West Championship April 21-23 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
