Boys’ & Girls’ Swim: Breakers repeat as league champs

Heading into the final few weeks of the regular season, the Laguna Beach High swim teams have followed a script designed for success to the T.

Both the Laguna boys’ and girls’ teams clinched an Orange Coast League championship Wednesday by taking care of visiting Godinez. The Breaker boys won by a 127-43 score, the girls, by a score of 119-50.

In the boys’ meet, Laguna won 11 events including all three relay events. The 200-yard medley relay team of Erik Juliusson, Caleb Scott, Cameron Karkoska and Max Morgan, won in 1 minute 49.40 seconds. Morgan, Karkoska, Cade Baldridge and Juliusson, teamed to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:35.53. Baldridge anchored the 400 free relay, which was led by Jack Dodson and followed by Trevor Collins and Nolan Del Toro. The quartet won in 3:40.53.

Other Laguna wins went to Dodson (200 free, 1:56.44); Morgan (200 individual medley, 2:12.41); Baldridge (50 free, 23.31); Karkoska (100 butterfly, 100.00; 100 breaststroke, 1:06.39); Juliusson (100 free, 49.56; 100 backstroke, 56.36); and Henry White (500 free, 5:24.29).

Four Breakers, Baldridge (50 free, 100 free), Morgan (200 IM), Juliusson (100 free) and Dodson (200 free), set CIF qualifying times during the meet.

Juliusson has set school records this year in the 200 IM (1:57.78), 500 free (4:43.19), and 200 free (1:46.23).

The Laguna girls won seven events. Sydney Saxe, Lexi Del Toro, Lila Vera and Makenzie Fischer took the 200 medley relay in 2:00.50. Individual winners were: Fischer (200 free, 2:00.41); Vera (200 IM, 2:14.45); Saxe (50 free, 27.18); Natalie Selin (100 butterfly, 1:11.44); MacKenzie Baldridge (500 free, 5:43.60), and Jenna Knott (100 breaststroke, 1:16.52).

Fischer (200 free), Vera (100 free) and Abby Cohn (100 backstroke) set CIF qualifying times Wednesday.

The boys’ and girls’ teams are now 4-0 in league competition, and both close out their OCL slate Wednesday at home against Saddleback.

“Both teams have swam great the entire season,” Laguna Coach Kari Johnson said. “We haven’t had one ‘bad’ meet. They just keep getting better. I can’t wait to see them swim their season-best times at league finals and even faster at CIF.

“The thing I love about both of these teams is they push themselves to the limits when it counts. They all know what counts is our performance at CIF.”

Several Breakers have hit CIF-consideration times during the season and Johnson said the hope is to turn them into “automatic cuts,” at the OCL finals May 2. Johnson said that several other Breakers already have posted CIF-automatic cut times.

The league preliminaries are April 30, and both the prelims and finals will be held at Costa Mesa High.

After that, it’s on to CIF. The Southern Section prelims start May 7.

“Our training is designed to peak at CIF and we are on the right track to do that this year,” Johnson said.

The boys’ and girls’ teams were in stride last May at the CIF Southern Section Division 3 finals at Riverside Community College. The boys’ team finished runner-up to the division title, and the girls’ team placed third.
