High School Roundup: CdM boys’ lacrosse top seed in playoffs

The Corona del Mar High boys’ lacrosse team earned the top seed in the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs and Newport Harbor a No. 13 seed.

The Sea Kings (15-2), the defending U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division champions, open at home against No. 16 Dana Hills on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. CdM is ranked No. 4 in the state by LaxPower.com.

The Sailors (6-11) play at No. 4 JSerra on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

CORONA DEL MAR — Tyler Duncan, the winning pitcher, delivered a walk-off single that scored Brett Olson in a make-up game of the Newport Elks Tournament Saturday.

Olson led off the seventh inning with a double. Baron Schwarz singled to move Olson to third before Duncan hit the game-winning base hit.

Ryan Pierce was two for four with a stolen base. Olson went two for three with a double. Schwarz was two for four with a two-run home run and Peter Walecka was two for three with a double for CdM (7-15).

The Sea Kings play host to Irvine on Tuesday.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor wrapped up a solid week Saturday.

In need of three wins to secure second place in the Sunset League and qualify for the playoffs, the Sailors did just that, earning the No. 13 seed to next play at JSerra Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Sailors finished the regular season at 6-11, 3-3 in league, taking second place on a tiebreaker after splitting the regular season with Los Alamitos. Newport Harbor played the fourth most difficult schedule in the Southern Section, according to LaxPower.com.

Newport Harbor 10, Los Alamitos 8 (Saturday)

LOS ALAMITOS — The Sailors secured second place in the Sunset League with their first win at Los Alamitos.

Riley Peterson (one assist, two takeaways, four groundballs), Chris Buchanan (one assist, two takeaways, two groundballs), Alex Fuller (two takeaways, two groundballs), and Clay Smyth scored two goals each.

Goals were also scored by Kole Escher (one assist) and Brian Team (three groundballs), while Ritter Hagadorn provided an assist, five groundballs, and a takeaway. Christian Ruelas had 15 saves and three takeaways. Andrew Craft led the defense with three takeaways and two knockdowns.

Newport Harbor 9, Marina 8 (Thursday)

WESTMINSTER — Ritter Hagadorn led the Sailors with three goals and an assist in their Sunset League win over Marina.

Chris Buchanan scored twice. Other goals were scored by Garrett Farthing (one assist), Clay Smyth, John Mooers, and Nathan Chaness. Brandon Rausch won seven faceoffs, six groundballs, and assisted on two scores. Riley Peterson collected seven groundballs and had two takeaways. Other contributions were made by Brian Team (six groundballs), Andrew Craft (three takeaways, two knockdowns), and Noah Popick (two takeaways, two groundballs, two knockdowns). Christian Ruelas made 11 saves to secure the win.

Newport Harbor 13, Esperanza 6 (Tuesday)

NEWPORT BEACH — Riley Peterson led the Sailors with four goals, 10 groundballs, four face-offs won, and two takeaways in their non-league home victory on senior night at Davidson Field.

Brian Team had three goals, two assists, and four groundballs. Brandon Rausch had two goals, two assists, and three groundballs. Chris Buchanan scored twice and had four groundballs. Other goals were scored by Ritter Hagadorn (plus two takeaways) and Garrett Farthing. Clay Smyth had nine groundballs, three takeaways and an assist, while Nathan Chaness won seven face-offs. Defensively, the Sailors were led by Noah Popick (six groundballs, two takeaways, three knockdowns), Nathan Frank (four groundballs, three takeaways, two knockdowns) and Tyler Palmquist (five groundballs, one takeaway, one knockdown). Christian Ruelas and Tanner Wildman combined to make seven saves.
