NEWPORT COAST — Juniors Holland McKenna, Kekai Whitford and Maddy Abbott led the host Lightning to an impressive 25-13, 25-21, 29-27 season-opening sweep Wednesday.

McKenna had 17 kills and nine digs, while Whitford added 12 kills, 17 digs and five aces.

Abbott had 32 assists and seven digs for the winners, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 3-A.

Senior middle blocker Juliette Singarella had five kills, four blocks and two aces for Sage.

Newport Harbor 16, Crean Lutheran 2

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Kate Knight swept each of her sets in No. 1 singles play during the Sailors’ nonleague match on Wednesday.

Anna Burke and Kendall Cosenza, playing No. 1 doubles, swept and didn’t drop a game.

Annie LaGrandeur and Reagan Rutter swept in No. 2 doubles.

The Sailors (2-0) compete in the two-day Sage Hill Invitational, starting on Friday.

NEWPORT BEACH — Briana Rayhaun and Connie Yu swept their three sets at No. 3 doubles, helping the Lightning dominate doubles play in the program’s season opener on Wednesday.

Abby Ruck and Crystal Yu, playing No. 2 doubles, won two sets for Sage Hill, along with Natalie Meltzer, who teamed with up with two partners, Poonan Patel and Tess Alexander.

Amira Tarsadia, Celine Wang and Jaclyn Gerschultz each claimed one set in singles play.

Dana Hills 217, Newport Harbor 263

LAGUNA NIGUEL — Sophomore Grace Ferrell led the visiting Sailors by shooting six-over-par 42 in the nonleague season opener Wednesday at El Niguel Country Club.

Tehya Corona shot 49 for Newport Harbor, which plays host to Dana Hills on Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club.
