Around Town: Baby items donated at brunch in Newport Beach

About $820 worth of toys, diapers and other baby items were donated to Santa Ana-based nonprofit MOMS Orange County during an event Sunday at True Food Kitchen in Newport Beach.

Thirty guests attended the brunch presented by the Orange County chapter of Ladies Who Dine.

“We are deeply grateful to community supporters and groups like Ladies Who Dine who are critical in our mission to support at-risk mothers and families in Orange County,” MOMS Orange County Chief Executive Pam Pimentel said in a statement.

Ladies Who Dine, a organization based in Las Vegas, has been holding philanthropic dining events since 2013.

The new Orange County chapter plans quarterly social gatherings and volunteer opportunities to help local nonprofits.

Costa Mesa supervisor honored with leadership award

A Costa Mesa maintenance supervisor was honored recently with the CEO’s Leadership Award.

George Cortez, a nine-year city employee, is responsible for sports field preparation, maintenance and renovation; irrigation management; special-event support; maintenance and repair of park buildings; and planting, fixing or renovating landscaping and site furnishings in the city’s 29 parks, according to a news release.

“He always has time for his staff and tries to meet their individual needs while responding to high-priority requests from the council, CEO’s office and management,” city spokesman Tony Dodero said in a statement. “He has shown a dedication and commitment to providing the highest-quality service possible to the residents and visitors to the city of Costa Mesa.”

Costa Mesa treatment center to host free presentation

Simple Recovery, a chemical-dependency treatment center in Costa Mesa, will host a free educational event Feb. 11 featuring former NFL quarterback Eric Hipple.

Hipple will talk about risks student-athletes are exposed to, such as performance-enhancing drugs, substance abuse, stress and depression.

The presentation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1901 Newport Blvd.

Junior League of O.C. celebrates 60 years

The Junior League of Orange County, a Newport Beach-based nonprofit, is celebrating its 60th anniversary.

A gala is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity in Costa Mesa’s South Coast Collection.

Tickets are $75 in advance and $80 at the door.

Easter donations sought for Marine families

Costa Mesa City Hall and its Military Affairs Team are accepting donations of medium-size and large plastic eggs, candy and small toys for families of the 1st Battalion 5th Marines, the city’s “adopted” battalion.

The materials will be used for an Easter egg hunt at Camp Pendleton.

Donations can be dropped off at City Hall, 77 Fair Drive, through March 18.

New CEO appointed for UC Irvine Health

UC Irvine’s vice chancellor for health affairs, Howard Federoff, has been appointed chief executive of the UC Irvine Health system. His appointment was approved Jan. 21 by the University of California Board of Regents.

Federoff will be responsible for administration of UCI-related clinical locations and for leading the growth of UCI’s regional clinics and partnerships.

Before he joined UCI in July, Federoff was executive vice president for health sciences and executive dean of the medical school at Georgetown University.
