Edison High culinary students get a sweet lesson from Bubba’s

Students in Edison High School’s advanced culinary class got a visit from a neighbor in Huntington Beach Thursday, who came bearing sweet treats and a bit of business advice.

Priscilla Wilson, owner and executive baker of Bubba Sweets, passed down some knowledge on promoting products as well as online and social media presence, to the students during their class.

The class is designed to teach the students culinary skills and entrepreneurship, according to the course’s instructor Rebecca Richter.

“The students were extremely enthusiastic and, of course, they loved the food,” Richter said. “It’s a great thing for the kids to hone in on so by the time they leave our program, they are career-ready and that’s our goal.”

The bakery’s previous owners Erieka Pimentel and her husband, James, put their cupcake-making skills to the test in 2013 for an episode of “Cupcake Wars,” season 7. With four teams in the challenge, the couple made it through three rounds of judging during the episode, ultimately winning the competition.

The Huntington Beach bakery also won the Taste of Huntington Beach that year with their German Chocolate Cupcake.

At the end of Wilson’s presentation Thursday, Richter’s students snatched up samples of Bubba Sweets’ cupcakes, such as the chocolate Stormin Normin’, the Lemon Love, and the Hershey-topped Willy Wonka.
