Softball: Former Sailor signs with Sonoma State

Share

Former Newport Harbor High softball pitcher Hattie Marshall has signed to continue her career at Sonoma State, her father, Brian, said Friday.

Marshall was a two-time Newport-Mesa Player of the Year with the Sailors before graduating in 2013. She played as a freshman at Concordia University before dislocating her left (non-throwing) elbow during a slide in practice, which sidelined her for nearly a year.

Marshall played this past spring for Santa Ana College, earning second-team All-Orange Empire Conference accolades. She was third on the Dons with a .400 batting average and had team-best totals of eight home runs and 34 runs batted in. The home run total was fourth in the conference. In the circle, Marshall was 9-9 with a 4.21 earned-run average.

She helped the Dons (20-22) finish tied for third in conference and make the California Community College Athletic Assn. Softball Southern Regional Playoffs. Santa Ana, the No. 13 seed, was swept in two games at No. 4 Palomar.

Marshall has two years of college eligibility left. Sonoma State is an NCAA Division II program.
