Organizers are gearing up for the inaugural Open Arts & Music Festival to be held next month in Glendale Central Park, featuring music performances, an arts market and a public art installation.

Jess Castillo, special events coordinator for Glendale Arts, one of the event’s sponsors, said the festival is designed for longtime local residents as well as new ones.

“The city has been under a lot of change lately,” she said. “This festival is an opportunity to create a welcoming and family-oriented environment for the residents of Glendale.”

She also said that Glendale Arts, which manages the Alex Theatre, often focuses on downtown events. The Open Arts & Musical Festival will allow for more outreach to the entire city.

At the festival, the arts market will be a curated venue highlighting artists and arts organizations based in the greater L.A. area, Castillo said.

“Some artists will be selling their wares; some will be doing information engagement,” she said, adding that all artists and organizations participating are encouraged to offer all-ages workshops and hands-on activities throughout the day.

Live musical performances will be presented on two stages featuring both local and international performers. The lineup should be announced soon, Castillo said.

Festival-goers can also visit the nearby the Museum of Neon Art, a new addition to the city and a space that features neon, electric and kinetic art.

There will be two beer gardens and one wine garden at the festival, Castillo said, with Brewyard Beer Co. serving as one of the garden partners.

“They’re actually Glendale’s first brewery,” Castillo said, adding that Eagle Rock Brewery is also partnering on the event.

A temporary public art installation in the form of a projection-mapping piece will be screened the day of the festival onto the east wall of the historic Masonic Temple, located on Brand Boulevard across from the Americana at Brand. This piece will use several projectors that will match the various surfaces on the wall, creating an animated visual work of art Castillo said.

To further promote a family-oriented atmosphere, there will also be a kids’ area with interactive arts programming, Castillo said, such as live performances by various acts and organizations, games, artist-led workshops and a picnic area.

The Open Arts & Music Festival will be held from noon to 10 p.m. on Sept. 17 in Glendale Central Park, located at Brand and Colorado Street.
