Community: Keeping things safe all week long
Several locations throughout the city are set aside for youth to have a place to go in times of emergencies, and these are known as Safe Places. Mayor Laura Friedman issued a formal proclamation on March 13 naming March 18 to 24 as Safe Place Week in Glendale.
As part of the celebration, the Safe Place Advisory Committee hosted an appreciation reception for all of its supporters on March 21 at the home of Advisory Committee Chairman Norman Mamey and his wife M.J. Karmi.
More than 50 Safe Place network volunteers, site representatives and supporters attended, including representatives from the Glendale police and fire departments, Glendale public parks, Glendale Bee Line, YMCA and members of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. Each of these agencies are part of the Safe Place community network, providing open doors to youth in need.
Also attending were service club presidents Jory Potts of Glendale Sunrise Rotary and Suzie Dell of Glendale Kiwanis.
Those attending learned that the most recent locations added are Shaker’s Restaurant in Glendale and Rocky Cola Cafe in Montrose. In addition, some of the youth served this year included a runaway/kicked out youth, pregnant teens and youth suffering from emotional crises such as depression, self-harm and bullying. Committee members are Marilyn Gunnell, who brought Safe Place to Glendale in 2000, Dorothy Grebelsky, Lt. Susan Hayn, Ed Malouf, Don Icardo, Lisa Rippey, Stephen Ropfogel and M.J. Karmi.
CV High alum set to finish law school
Crescenta Valley High School graduate (Class of 2003) and UC Santa Cruz baccalaureate Lauren G. Wilkinson will receive a juris doctorate from California Western School of Law in San Diego. Lauren graduates this month and will take the California State Bar Exam in July.
She is the daughter of Marly and Greg Wilkinson.
Boy Scout leaders receive honors
Sixteen past presidents of the Verdugo Hills Council of Boy Scouts of America and current council President Dennis Barlow were honored at a reception before the Boy Scout Auction on Friday at the Castaway in Burbank.
They were Sheldon Baker, Tye Veden, Keith Swaner, John Reese, Bruce Hinckley, Bob Nellis, Barry Lane, Ken Henisey, Dan Orozco, David King, Jack Wagner, Jim Rabe, Bob Bunker, Bill James, Dennis Fors and Rahla Lindsey.
Baker, Veden and Nellis all received their Eagle Scout award in this council. Hinckley is an Eagle Scout, but he earned his rank in the Redlands council.
Glendale Healthy Kids events abound
Glendale Healthy Kids provider Kids Dental Place will be moving May 31, and a move is on to display artwork by local kids by holding a contest. The theme is “Nature,” and entries can be submitted to 1201 N. Pacific Ave., Glendale, CA 91202. There will be prizes in three age groups: 1 to 5, 6 to 11 and 12 to 18. Two events are coming up to benefit Glendale Healthy Kids. The Glendale Assn. of Realtors is having a “Taste of Wine” from 5 to 8 p.m. April 25 at Red Carpet Wines.
