Maria Schmitt-Hunnicutt, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend to many, passed away Monday July 2nd after a short battle with ALS. Maria was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1932 and moved to the valley at the age of nine where she would remain a resident for the next 71 years. After graduating from Glendale High School in 1950 Maria married her husband James Schmitt and moved to La Canada to begin her married life and start a family. Together with James, she would raise four children and become an active member of St Bede’s Parish and School (where all of the children attended during the 60’s and 70’s).
Maria was very active in her church community and participated in several community activities including the Thursday Club, Cabrini, and the Italian Catholic Federation. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and cooking large Italian meals for her family and friends. She valued hard work – rarely taking a sick day while working for nearly sixty years in the accounting field...the last ten years with Glendale-based V.E.R. (which is owned and operated by her cousins, the Dundee Family). Amazingly, Maria continued to work part-time for V.E.R. up until six weeks prior to her passing. She loved working... as It kept her mind sharp and had the added benefit of allowing her to be surrounded by so many friends and extended family members (including two of her own grandchildren!)
As everyone that knew Maria would attest to...she will always be remembered as an individual who put family and friends first; and a person who would go out of her way to make sure that no one left her kitchen table hungry!
A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, July 14th at with a public viewing preceding at St. Bede the Venerable. She was preceded in death by husband James in 1975 and her second husband Robert Hunnicutt in 2011. She is survived by her four children: Joanne and Andy Puscizna of Orange, David and Julie Schmitt of Murrieta, Paul and Janette Schmitt of Vista, and Robert and Tamra Schmitt of Littleton, Colorado, along with her 20 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
