Alex Robert Farrel 85, Burbank, California, passed to the heavens Friday, August 3rd, 2012, comforted by family at his side. Alex leaves behind his five wonderful children, Melinda, Kirk, Carey, Craig, and Chris, who along with their extended families will miss Alex dearly.
Alex was born Alexander Frank Furillo, cousin to legendary Dodger great Carl “the Reading Riffle” Furillo and famed sports journalist Bud “the Steamer” Furillo. Alex began a career in the broadcast industry back in the 1950’s as a technician and quickly worked his way up as a radio personality where he changed his name to Alex Robert Farrel. He later worked as a video editing engineer for ABC, earning an Emmy for his work on the 1984 Olympic Games, and was president of NABET Local 53.
Alex Farrel is somewhat of a legend among Burbank’s media industry. A resident for over 40 years, Alex was a former NABET Union president who rose to the position during a controversial grass roots campaign in which he ousted the former president in a landslide victory.
Alex is remembered, loved, and most of all missed by his family.
