Amy Leatherwood Waters “Nana” passed away peacefully in Burbank, California on August 12, 2012. The most important word in Amy’s vocabulary was “family.” Her unconditional love, care and support for members of her family was extraordinary. She was proud of the personal and educational achievements of family members and frequently could be found sharing that pride with friends. She was devoted to two husbands who predeceased her, two sons, two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Amy was born in Los Angeles on January 21, 1924. She attended Santa Monica City College at age 17 and studied nursing until she married Clinton “Mike” Leatherwood on August 31, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mike passed away on May 1, 1984. She later married David Waters on January 12, 1987 in Quartzsite, Arizona. David passed away on December 30, 1989.
Employed as a secretary for the Burbank Unified School District from July of 1958 to January of 1986, Amy served two schools: Roosevelt Elementary and Burbank High School. A winning personality and a warm and friendly manner combined with outstanding skills led to promotion. In July of 1965 she became the Administrative Assistant for Dr. Merrill, Assistant Superintendent for the Burbank Unified School District and later for his successor Delores Palmer. She retired in January of 1986.
Amy enjoyed traveling, reading, crocheting for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, visiting with family in Quartzsite, Arizona and spending time with her little dog Kiah (seen in the picture above). She is survived by her sons Jim Leatherwood and John Leatherwood; daughters-in-law Brenda Leatherwood and Terri Leatherwood; her sister Jackie Nelson and brother Bill Moon; grandchildren Deborah Wertz, Dan Leatherwood, Kathleen Sutphen, Jeff Leatherwood; and great-grandchildren Michael Wertz, Kelsey Wertz, Matthew Sutphen, Anelise Leatherwood, Aida Leatherwood, Andrew Leatherwood, Ashton Leatherwood, Avery Leatherwood.
Services will be held on Sept. 22, 2012 at 9:30 AM at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, Church of the Hills.
