On the Town: GCC Patrons Club installs officers; Clancy’s Crab Broiler serves Altrusa International dinner; Julliann and Ryan Mayer wed
“I hope to one day be able to extend a hand to others in the same manner you have done to me, to be able to make a difference in one’s life by providing others with tools to thrive in their chosen field,” said Trichele Bubla, recent graduate of the registered nursing program at Glendale Community College. Bubla was referring to the scholarship she was given by the college’s Patrons Club.
On Jan. 17 (Thursday) some 60 members of the Patrons Club, now 65 years old, patted themselves on the back for the tens of thousands of dollars donated to students at the college over those years. This year alone the club raised $25,000 for student scholarships. Burbank’s Castaway Restaurant was the Polynesian setting for these generous women’s annual Installation Luncheon.
Club Advisor and Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Paul Schlossman installed officers. The new board is made up of President Carolyn Payne, 1st Vice President Betty Musacco, 2nd Vice President Marianne Jennings, 3rd Vice Presidents Geri Costello and Shirley Wright, Treasurer Judy Gorham, Recording Secretary Pat Beggs and Corresponding Secretary and Courtesy Margaret Hammond.
VIPs attending included Interim Supt./President Jim Riggs, Board of Trustees President Armine Hacopian and member Anita Quinonez Gabrielian. Gertrude Ness can’t be left out among the dignitaries. She will celebrate her 107th birthday in April. Ness was accompanied by daughter Jo Ness. Gertrude is known for being the show-stopping model in the club’s Fashion Show and Luncheon held every November.
Patrons Club members will have the opportunity to be even more generous in the near future. According to Riggs, the college “will be adding more courses” this year — especially good news for students who have had difficulty finding the courses needed to transfer to universities in a timely manner.

Clancy’s Crab Broiler turned out crab, shrimp and salmon dishes for hungry Glendale Chapter members of Altrusa International Inc. The group’s dinner program and meeting on Wednesday (Jan. 16) was titled “Social Media Today.” Featured speaker Lee Wochner of Counterintuity LCC in Burbank held the attention of about 30 audience members as he spoke about his specialty, creative strategy. Wochner is also a USC professor in graduate-level writing. He has taught at the university since 2001.
Wochner pointed out that baby boomers control 80% of personal financial assets in the U.S. Although most Altrusa members are a little more mature for boomers, they especially appreciated the speaker’s tips on how they could market their organization through social media. One of those tips is reaching out to potential members via Facebook. Wochner informed his audience that 73% of people online in the U.S. are on Facebook. He gently chided Altrusa members for not having a Facebook page, a must for recruiting new members. Determined to use social media in the future are Altrusa visionaries, President Donnalee Monninger and Vice President Barbara Crawford. Also wearing the cap of event chair, Crawford had scheduled Wochner to speak at the dinner meeting.
In addition to Monninger and Crawford, Glendale residents attending were Pat Donlin, Yvette Guerrero, Pat Zayas, Rosa Frommer, Rosann Kim, Diane Stokes, Roberta Haggsian, Joan Nellis, Julie Vagts and Rose and Bill Tharp.
Several members of the Los Angeles Chapter of Altrusa also present included Jenny Chow and Alice Lipscomb. Both agreed that Clancy’s shrimp on spicy linguine pasta served in a sizzling skillet is not to be missed.

Love was in the air during the wedding reception of Julliann and Ryan Mayer. After their wedding in the Los Angeles Temple, the festivities were held Saturday (Jan. 19) in the highly decorated cultural hall of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on North Central Avenue. A false ceiling of billowing white fabric was a classy touch, basketball hoops covered as well.
Julliann is the daughter of David and Judy Keller of South Jordan, Utah. Ryan is the son of Glendale resident Tish Mayer and the late Kurt Mayer.
After honeymooning in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the couple will live in Los Angeles.
