Robert L. Harrington (“Bob”) died at the age of 91 on May 22, 2013. He was the youngest and last surviving child of ten children born to Jim and Nora Harrington, who both emigrated to this country from County Cork, Ireland, and made their home in the mining town of Jerome, Arizona. He is preceded in death by his beloved and adored wife of 44 years, Jewel Harrington, and his son, Robert James Harrington. He is survived by his two daughters, Gail Miller (husband Greg) and Patty Greene (husband Jim), four grandchildren Kelly (Miller) Brough (husband Andrew), Dillon Harrington, Kara Miller (husband John Grimsley), and Katie Rose Greene; three great-grandchildren, Leila, Korben, and Ilyana Brough; and twins expected in August to granddaughter Kara.

Bob graduated from the University of Arizona, where he played catcher on the baseball team. He served as a naval officer aboard a minesweeper, the YMS 340, in World War II, primarily engaged in action in the South Pacific. Bob was awarded a Navy Medal of Commendation for his participation in the rescue of survivors of the YMS 481 that sank during the invasion of Tarakan Island, in May of 1944, in Borneo. After the war, Bob went to work for Tidewater Oil Company in Los Angeles, where he eventually served as Engineering and Operations Supervisor. After 18 years of service he left to join his friend, Fred Fiedler, at his engineering firm as a Senior Vice President for 25 years until his retirement in 1989.

Bob had the Irish gift of humor and a gregarious nature and brought laughter, love, and kindness, to all who knew him. He was an avid fan of the Arizona Wildcats and the Notre Dame Irish. He was devoted to wonderful Irish family, by whom he will be missed, but lovingly remembered.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, 12:00pm, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 220 E. Elk Avenue, Glendale, CA 91205. Graveside service will be at 2:15pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 1712 S. Glendale Avenue, Glendale, CA 91205.
