On Sunday morning, Mildred Grace Sokolow, having just celebrated her 97th birthday, passed away peacefully with her family at her side. Millie was born in Plankinton, South Dakota to Clarence and Adda Goodlad. In 1921 her family moved to Los Angeles and eight years later her brother John was born. In the late 30s, Millie met her future husband, Lewis Sokolow while on horseback at the Griffith Park Stables; they married in 1939 and had two children, Kent Erle and Gale Louise.

While Lew was at war, Millie worked at MGM studios as a costume designer and seamstress. An avid golfer and bridge player she was a well known member of Oakmont Country Club in Glendale for over 70 years. She loved her Dodgers and tried to never miss a game. She was a pianist who loved the old “Hit Parade” tunes. She was recognized as one the foremost Budgerigar breeders and nationally recognized Judges.

She was a master at knitting or crocheting hand made knit goods and beautiful rag rugs. In recent years, she enjoyed her “Sushi/Sake” nights with Kent, Gale, and the grand kids. Millie spent as much time as possible at her beach home in Huntington Harbor, where she knitted while watching the boats go by.

In her later years Millie kept her mind sharp with her love for books, which she read daily. Embracing life to the fullest, Millie was not one to be held back. At the age of 93 Millie had her driver’s license suspended due to medical reasons, but she fought back and after several driving tests, had it reinstated.

In addition to her children, Kent and Gale, Millie will also be dearly missed by her grandchildren Taryn Mari’ and Robyn Layne (Kent’s kids), and Dana Erle and Jon Alden (Gale’s kids), and her pre-deceased younger brother, John and sister-in-law Nancy’s children Lisa, Lynn and “John Junior” and her favorite cousin, Lt. Colonel Harold Goodlad of Lompoc.

A private service was held Aug. 28, 2013 with a celebration of life at the Oakmont Country Club on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Arthritis Foundation (www.arthritis.org) will be greatly appreciated.
