Community: Project teaches about homelessness

Share

The whole family experiences what it’s like to be homeless at the fifth annual Box Car City benefiting Family Promise of East San Fernando Valley.

Adults, youth and children will spend the night from 3 p.m. Oct. 5 to 8 a.m. Oct. 6 in the parking lot of the Glendale Church of Christ, 2021 W. Glenoaks Blvd. Participants can decorate the cardboard boxes, tents and cars they will be sleeping in. Prizes will go to the most creative.

The cost to attend is $15 per person or $10 for groups of 10 or more or $50 per car. Youths must be supervised by adults. Meals will be provided for those staying overnight. A battle of the bands begins after dinner. Those not spending the night are asked to donate $5. Food will be available for purchase.

Proceeds help nonprofit Family Promise provide safe shelter, meals and programs to assist homeless in achieving independence and support services for low-income families to cope with the underlying causes of homelessness.
