Edward L. Henry

Ed Henry, a lifelong resident of Glendale, California, died on October 31 of natural causes at Verdugo Hills Hospital. He was 91.

Edward Lockwood Henry was born on October 12, 1922 in Fresno, California. His parents, Fred and Alice, moved to Glendale in 1927 when Ed was five. He attended R.D. White elementary school, Woodrow Wilson Junior High school, and he graduated from Glendale High School in 1940. After high school he entered UCLA but his education was interrupted by World War II. He joined the Army in 1943 and was discharged from the military as a Captain in 1946. He returned to UCLA and graduated with a degree in Economics in 1947. He was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity.

He met his future wife, Jane Post, while stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was an officer in the Military Police during his tour of duty in Italy. After returning from Europe in 1946, Ed and Jane were married in Jane’s hometown of Mobile, Alabama. They moved back to Glendale after their marriage.

Ed held a number of jobs in the Southern California area while he completed his education and became a Certified Public Accountant. During his career he was a successful supermarket executive working for Mayfair Markets as Controller, Arden- Mayfair as Vice President and Treasurer, Smith’s Food King, and ABC Markets. One of his favorite assignments was setting up Farrell’s Ice Cream parlors in the late 1960s. After he retired in 1984, he continued to keep busy with part-time consulting assignments and accounting work.

Ed’s hobbies revolved around his family, friends, traveling, and food. Ed and Jane traveled extensively once their children had grown. They made numerous trips to Europe and especially to Italy, a place he had fallen in love with during his time there during the War. He learned to speak fluent Italian and he had a special fondness for Italian food. He was also an avid UCLA football and basketball supporter.

After 56 years of marriage, his beloved wife Jane passed away in 2002. After Jane’s passing, Ed moved to Twelve Oaks Lodge, where he resided until October 2013. Ed had a long connection with Twelve Oaks where both he and Jane had served as volunteers as members of the National Charity League.

Ed is survived by his son Bill Henry (Pam) and daughter Marilyn Yruegaz; four grandchildren: Kimberly Herrin (Phil), Kelly Cicuto (Chris), Thomas Henry (Selby), and Michael Henry (Chelsea); and nine great grandchildren: Josh, Zach, Gavin and Zoe Herrin, Connor and Travis Henry, Samantha and Jackson Cicuto, and Max Henry.

Per Ed’s wishes there will be no services, his family will have a celebration of his life at the end of the month. Donations can be made in his name to the Ronald McDonald House.
