Paris in Pasadena

The Pasadena Symphony closes its “Singpoli Classics Series” on April 30 with two performances of a French-themed program that ends with Gershwin’s “An American in Paris.”

Conducting the concert will be David Lockington, the ensemble’s music director, opening with Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld” and Erik Satie’s “Gymnopédie No. 2.” Joyce Yang, the youngest-ever Van Cliburn silver medalist, will then solo on Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Minor.

The concert’s second half begins with Fauré’s “Pelléas et Mélisande,” closing with the iconic Gershwin piece, famous from the Gene Kelly film and subsequent Broadway revivals.

The matinee and evening performances are at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. (A pre-concert discussion with Lockington begins one hour before curtain.) Tickets start at $35. The Ambassador Auditorium is at 131 South St. John Ave. in Pasadena. More info at www.pasadenasymphony-pops.org and (626) 793-7172.

Jazz Prayers

The Jack Lantz Trio will perform a Jazz Vespers in a concert in-the-round on April 10 at the La Cañada Presbyterian Church. The performance will happen in the church’s Cook Prayer Chapel beginning at 5 p.m.

The trio will perform hymns and sacred music in a jazz style. “The musical style, setting and simple liturgy will provide a calm way to finish Sunday afternoon and prepare ourselves for the challenges of the week ahead,” Lantz said in a release.

The La Canada Presbyterian Church is at 626 Foothill Blvd. For more info, email jazz@lacanadapc.org.

Curbed Laughter

One byproduct of the 2016 election season is seeing comic Larry David’s ongoing performances as “Bernie Sanders” on “Saturday Night Live,” playing off the persona created on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” But every comedy star needs a sideman, and for him that has been longtime “Curb” partner Jeff Garlin, who appears onstage four times this June at Flappers in Burbank.

Garlin is both a co-star and executive producer of “Curb.” But as “Curb” has gone into periods of hibernation, he’s found other ways to keep busy, joining the cast of current ABC sitcom “The Goldbergs.” He also directed the 2006 indie film “Someone to Eat Cheese With,” based on his one-man show. He currently splits his time between Los Angeles and Chicago and in his press materials refers to “napping” as one of his hobbies.

Garlin is no stranger to the Flappers stage. He returns for two shows a night on June 24 and 25. Performances are at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tickets are $20, with a two-item minimum. Advance purchase of tickets recommended.

Flappers is at 102 E. Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank. More info at flapperscomedy.com and (818) 845-9721.
