Academy inducts three sisters into Hall of Fame

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy inducted three sisters into its Hall of Fame on Sept. 26 during the school’s annual family Mass and fiesta celebration.

Laura MacPherson Fredricks of the Class of 1988, Heather MacPherson Smith of the Class of 1991 and Melissa MacPherson Korn of the Class of 1997 all excelled in swimming and led their academy swim teams to CIF championships. And again following in one another’s footsteps, all three attended La Salle University in Philadelphia on swim scholarships.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy coaches Kirk Nishiyama and Betsy Sauer, who coached the girls while they were at the academy, lauded the three for their athletic ability, intensity and competitive spirit.

Garden club honors longtime members

The Chevy Chase Estates Garden Club honored four of its longtime members on Sept. 21 with a tea at the home of member Diane Stevens.

Life Honorary Memberships were presented to Dorothy Waldron, who is a founding member; Esther Stapleton, Gloria Burke and Mary Mason, all of Glendale. In appreciation of their continued support, Antherium plants were presented to them.

The Chevy Chase Estates Garden Club, a nonprofit club, was established in 1949 to help beautify Glendale by promoting and supporting programs of conservation and natural resources. The club also supports other community programs. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month from September through June.
