Time capsule marks chamber’s 100th year
Officials with the Glendale Chamber of Commerce marked the 100th anniversary of its incorporation, on Sept. 10, 1910, with a time capsule ceremony on Sept. 21.
The ceremony was presided over by Chamber President Rick Lemmo. Both Lemmo and Rich Roche, the chamber’s immediate past president, officially kicked off the celebration at the Centennial Gala in June.
The capsule will be buried in Perkins Plaza at a date to be announced. It will be removed in 25 years, precisely on Sept. 21, 2035.
The chamber invited current chamber board members, past chamber presidents, enduring chamber members (businesses such as Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks and the Glendale News-Press, which have been members the longest) and City Council members to place an item in the time capsule — something current that represents a particular business and/or the community.
Items contributed include photographs, brochures, business cards, advertisements, business directories and service club rosters, local bus schedule, a DVD and mug from the Glendale Police Department, a reusable canvas bag, Sept. 21 edition of the News-Press and even a bottle of designer water.
The capsule is a two-cubic-foot cube, provided by Chamber Board Member Marko Swan, owner of Cygnet Stamping. Board Member Scott Drolet, Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, will provide the 800-pound vault in which the capsule is placed. Board member T.J. Denton, Thomas Denton & Co., is providing the plaque for welding to the capsule.
City staff prepared the request and report for City Council’s approval of the Chamber’s use of city property. City Council unanimously approved the project at its Sept. 14 meeting.

Patrons’ Club raising scholarship funds
The Patrons’ Club of Glendale Community College is planning its scholarship fashion show with luncheon and silent auction beginning at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 5 at the Castaway, 1250 Harvard Road, Burbank.
The theme is “Autumn Magic.” Fashions will be by Holiday Hats and Gowns and Men’s Wearhouse.
The cost is $45, and reservations can be made by calling Betty Musacco at (818) 243-0908 by Oct. 23. There will be many prizes, including a $1,000 cash prize.
Leading the Fashion Show Committee are Chairwoman Marianne Jennings, Financial Secretary Shirley Wright, and Tickets and Reservations, Betty Musacco, Karen Wharton, Shirley Wright and Flora Corsini.
Last year the Patrons’ Club awarded 56 scholarships and grants-in-aid to qualified students. Proceeds for the awards were generated through the yearly luncheon.

Youths invited to apply for award
Soroptimist International of Glendale is accepting applications for its annual Violet Richardson Award, which honors young women’s volunteer action.

The award honors young women, between the ages of 14-17 for volunteer action such as fighting drugs, crime and violence, cleaning up the environment and working to end discrimination and poverty.
As a volunteer organization for business and professional women, Soroptimist believes that by acknowledging young women’s volunteer involvement now, they will grow up to be vital, active members of the community.
In March, Soroptimist International of Glendale will present a $750 award to the winner along with a like award to the organization she serves. She will then join other club winners who will go on to be judged at the region level. The region winner will be announced at the region Spring Conference being held in Carlsbad in April where she will again be given a cash award, along with her organization.
All region winners go on to compete at the federation level. Soroptimist International of the America’s will announce their Violet Richardson Award winner at the Soroptimist Leadership Institute being held in Hawaii this coming August where the winner will again receive a cash award along with her organization.
This award program is named after Violet Richardson, president of the first Soroptimist club, which was formed in 1921.
