Las Candelas wraps gifts for children
Members of Las Candelas joined in the celebration at the annual VMH Care Christmas party for the clients of the Glen Roberts Child Study Center earlier this month. The Las Candelas members had previously gift wrapped more than 500 packages for the children and were on hand to distribute them at the party and to assist with craft making.
Las Candelas is a Glendale-based organization of 40 women who provide programs and volunteer service for emotionally disturbed children. The group has had a long association with VMH Care and was instrumental in the founding of the center more than 50 years ago.

Bullying prevention training set
Bully Me Not!, a bullying prevention organization based in Glendale, is presenting a training series on how to deal with bullying.
SuEllen Fried, nationally known author and founder of Bully Safe USA (https://www.bullysafeusa.com) will lead “Train the Trainer Institute,” a bullying prevention program, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 10 to 12 at the Glendale Unified School District Professional Development Center, 319 N. Central Ave., Glendale.
The cost of $225 includes continental breakfasts, lunches, training manual and teaching materials. To participate, mail a check for $225 by Monday to Glendale Sunrise Rotary Foundation, P.O. Mental health organization receives grant
Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services, which provides children’s mental-health services, recently received a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Verdugos. Founded in 1956, the foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents throughout Burbank, Glendale, La Crescenta, La Cañada Flintridge, Montrose and Verdugo City.
The award is earmarked for the purchase of textbooks and computers for use by the youngsters who attend Hathaway-Sycamores’ non-public school located on Hathaway-Sycamores’ El Nido campus in Altadena. It is state-certified and offers a year-round educational and behavioral program for students ages 7 to 18 with serious emotional challenges and learning disabilities.
The Community Foundation of the Verdugos is a publicly supported charitable endowment with more than $7 million in assets, the Community Foundation of the Verdugos makes grants from the earnings of its invested contributions to local nonprofit organizations in the greater Verdugo area.

Church conducts bone marrow registry drives
More than 120 people came to St. Bede church on Dec. 12 and registered or updated their information for the national bone marrow registry, Be A Match program, on behalf of people who may need bone marrow transplants.
This drive was led by local Boy Scout Billy Adler from Troop 509 and his fellow Scouts, St. Francis students, La Cañada High School students and St. Bede students. Additionally, more than $400 was raised toward supporting this program.
Two more opportunities to register for the bone marrow registry will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 16 and May 22 at St. Bede church, 215 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge. On May 22 there will also be a blood drive simultaneously. For more information, contact cancerfree4Mike@aol.com.
