Columbus school choir tames Lions
The 90-member Columbus Elementary School Choir was featured at the Northwest Glendale Lions Club’s annual Christmas program at the Foothill Service Club for the Blind in Glendale.
The choir sang songs that magically touched everybody in the audience with their selection of beautiful cross-cultural holiday songs. Many of their songs featured step-out individual student singers, plus some student duos and quartets. Second grade teacher and Choir Director Nancy Pozo-Jones led the choir again in its many wonderful songs. She had the very talented fourth-grade teacher Kristen LoBello as the choir’s musical accompanist.
The Lions Club also recognized at the event its Peace Poster Contest winner from Columbus School, Erika Hookasian. Erika is a fifth-grader at Columbus. Her poster was selected as No. 1 from the 120 students at Columbus who competed in the contest. She was joined by her mother and father, Anahid and Edmond Houkasian, at the awards luncheon event.
Columbus Principal Beatriz Bautista and teacher specialist Nora Doctorian were both recognized for their school leadership and support of Erika and the choir. The Lions Club has given awards to students from Columbus for the past 15 years.
Lions Club President Ted Walters had a very busy time not only giving Erika her award and recognizing the Columbus School Choir and leaders, but he had a very packed audience of visiting Lions and their families and friends. Lions from the clubs in Eagle Rock, Toluca Lake, Griffith Park and L.A. Mid-Valley all attended the luncheon program.
The night before the annual Christmas event, a charter party was held at the Glendale Community College campus Student Center to install the new Glendale College Campus Leo Club. The club was chartered with 45 members. Student Joseph Roszhart was installed as the club president. The Northwest Glendale Lions Club sponsored the event with President Walters presiding and Ross Adams installing the club’s first officers.
The Campus Leo Club has already started its activities with eight of the new Leo Club members having gone to Pasadena to help decorate the Lions Rose Float. As the Campus Leo Club grows, the Northwest Lions look forward to supporting their activities.

88 YEARS OF SERVICE TO GLENDALE
The year 2011 is the 88th year that the Glendale Kiwanis Club has served our community in manyways. The club has had a focus on helping children and the youth in the community.
For the year 2010, the club donated more than $150,000 to different charities in the area. Those donations were in addition to the more than 4,000 hours of physical work the members gave tolocal charities.
At the club meeting last Friday, the Youth Services Committee Co-Chairwoman Judy Seelig kicked off the club’s donation campaign for 2011. She presented two checks to the Glendale Unified School District’s representative Amy Lambert. She gave a $1,500 check for the School Clothing for Low Income Students program, and gave Lambert a $500 check for the GUSD Scholastic Bowl program.
