Elms Convalescent celebrated National Nursing Home Week with lunch and thank-you gifts to its staff for its dedication to the seniors in its community on May 13 at 212 W. Chevy Chase Drive in Glendale.
Genaro Navarro was honored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich’s office and the city of Glendale for his 35 years of service and loyalty to long-term health care. He has never called in sick in all of his 35 years. He is one example of the dedication of the staff here at Elms Convalescent, Elms officials said.
The Knell family owns Elms Convalescent. Elms has the oldest resident in the city of Glendale. Florence Tuckman, 108, has been at Elms since she was 99. Dolores Diehl has been the administrator for 18 years. She has been serving the health-care industry for 38 years.
Council recognizes Burbank volunteers
The Burbank City Council honored seven recipients of the Older Americans Volunteer Services Award on May 17.
The recipients include Virginia Duffy, for her volunteer service to the Burbank Animal Shelter; Anne Franklin, for her service to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center and the American Cancer Society; Annette Gradney, for her service as a Providence senior peer counselor; Marion Hunter, for her service to the Burbank fire and Police departments; John Kemmerer, for his service in the Burbank Police and Fire Departments and Retired Senior Volunteer Program Children’s Reading Program; David Snyder for his service to the Burbank Animal Shelter; and Darryl Forbes, who has been selected as Burbank’s recipient of the County of Los Angeles Older Americans Outstanding Volunteer Service Award for his volunteer service to the Burbank Temporary Aid Center.
Forbes was also honored by the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors on Monday at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in the Music Center Grand Hall.
Porto’s honored for bakery donations
Porto’s Bakery in Glendale was recognized May 17 by the Union Rescue Mission for donating bread and bakery goods seven days a week to the nonprofit organization that helps people dealing with homelessness.
Representatives came by to present Betty Porto, vice president of community relations, with a plaque that states the Los Angeles organization’s appreciation for the store’s contribution along with a picture of a little girl holding a Porto’s pastry.
The bakery began donating between 250 to 400 boxes of baked goods a month since 2008, and now it’s grown to more than 800 boxes a month, said Alexandra Monsibaez, gifts-in-kind representative.
Porto’s contribution is important because donations are down due to the poor economy, Monsibaez said.
“So community partners are vital to us because we save money on our food budget,” she said.
Union Rescue Mission was established in 1891 and provides emergency and long-term services to the homeless including food, shelter, clothing, medical and dental care, transitional housing and job training.
The winter shelters draw 5,000 people a day, and the mission has 1,670 living at the center, the Glendale Armory and Hope Gardens in Sylmar. During the rest of the year, the center feeds 3,000 a day and has 1,000 people staying overnight in the three facilities, said Andy Bates, chief executive of the mission.
