Resident completes basic training

Navy Seaman Recruit Edwin G. Sanchez, son of Maria G. Navarrete of Glendale and Erasmo Sanchez of Glendale, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. Sanchez is a 2006 graduate of Hoover High School.

During the eight-week program, Sanchez completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Elks Lodge honors graduating seniors

Seventeen college-bound seniors from seven of the area high schools were honored at the 81st annual Elks Scholarship Awards Dinner sponsored by the Glendale Elks Lodge 1289.

The top five finalists competing for district, state and national honors received scholarships totaling $45,700 in value. Three of the top five finalists attend Crescenta Valley High School. Samuel Kim and Esther Lim, both students at CV, received top honors, with Samuel placing sixth nationally and Esther placing fifth. Samuel will be attending Princeton in the fall while Esther will be at Harvard.

The other three national finalists are CV graduating senior Brian Roxas, who will be attending Cornell University, Gloria Hong (Hoover High School) will be attending Harvard and Connor Dorothy (Eagle Rock High School) will be attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
