Community service from our students
The Kiwanis Clubs sponsor Key Clubs in our high schools. The Lions sponsor Leo Clubs, and the Rotary sponsors Interact Clubs. Our schools get a good mix of student growth and effective community projects from the clubs.
Much time is spent by service club members supporting student projects. Each fall as school starts up again, the clubs get active in recruiting and developing student leadership teams.
Last week Camille Levee of the Glendale Sunrise Rotary Club gave a very instructive talk on how to form and maintain an Interact Club at high schools in our community at the Crescenta-Cañada Rotary. Levee defined “Interact” as short for International Action.
Interact Clubs meet regularly each week either at the high school, with a school advisor, or at another community location with a Rotary advisor. Each club can have six or more members from eighth to 12th grade. A club must have a project each year, a fundraiser and an additional project with their sponsoring Rotary Club. Interact Club members are invited to attend Rotary Club meetings.
Levee suggested every club should sponsor an Interact Club. It sets a good example of the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” for students.

Members of the Verdugo Hills Council’s Spe-Le-Yai Lodge joined over 1,400 Arrowmen in West Virginia in July to participate in the Boy Scouts of America’s Summit Corps 2011. Boy Scouts belonging to the Order of the Arrow improved the Garden Grand Hike and bike trail near the New River Gorge National River, one of the oldest rivers on the conti¿nent. Members also helped to remove invasive species. Contingent Leader Cory Nakanishi and son Ryan Nakanishi of Burbank troop 209 were among the Arrow¿ men in West Virginia. Chief Scout Executive Robert Mazzuca said mem¿ bers of the Order of the Arrow who are known as scouting’s “National Honor Society,” said they exem¿plify the best in scouting programs. “The physical contribu¿ tions you made to improv¿ing the New River Gorge National River were huge— in fact, it was the largest youth volunteer project in the history of the National Park Service,” Mazzuca wrote in a release. “Your hard work and service have been exempla¿ ry as we launch the next 100 years of scouting.”
