Family Promise to fill empty bowls, new leaders for P.E.O. Sisterhood
Family Promise is having its third annual Empty Bowl fundraiser on June 2 with proceeds going to provide safe shelter, meals and support for homeless families.
Guests are welcome from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Glendale, 134 N. Kenwood St., Glendale.
The event brings together independent potters, arts associations and other community groups to donate their handcrafted ceramic bowls. Guests who purchase adult tickets will receive one-of-a-kind bowls that will be used to serve a simple meal of soup with bread and a dessert donated by area restaurants.
Guests can take their bowls home with them as symbols of the hunger and uncertainty homeless families face daily.
Participating potters include teachers and students from the Burbank Creative Arts Center, Glendale Community College, Harry Berman Studio, Juls Pottery, North Hollywood High School, Peachtree Studio and Los Angeles Valley College.
Porto’s Bakery & Cafe headlines a list of fine local restaurants donating soup, bread and desserts.
Family Promise of East San Fernando Valley opened in July 2010 as one of more than 183 networks across the country affiliated with Family Promise, a national nonprofit organization committed to helping homeless families achieve lasting independence.
Family Promise of the East San Fernando Valley serves Glendale, Eagle Rock, Burbank and North Hollywood.

Officers lead education group
New officers have taken their positions with the Reciprocity group of the Philanthropic Education Organization, more commonly known as the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Reciprocity is made up of 15 chapters with more than 700 members.
Leading the 2013-2014 year are President Linda Rose, of Chapter GD; Vice President Karil Drake, of Chapter KD; Recording Secretary Debbie Steffens, of Chapter JI; Corresponding Secretary Charlene Carnachan, of Chapter IH; and Treasurer Emily Whytock, of Chapter FF.
Members come from Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, Burbank and the foothill communities to promote educational opportunities for women, said Donna Hekler, of Glendale.
Healthy Kids receives special honor
Glendale Healthy Kids officials are walking a little taller after receiving the Los Angeles Business Journal’s Healthcare Leadership Award during a luncheon last month at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.
“I was pretty stunned and excited,” said Sharon Townsend Roth, chief executive officer of the organization. “A small Glendale nonprofit walked among giants in healthcare. I stood among the CEOs of the City of Hope, UCLA Medical Center, Children’s Hospital and St. Vincent’s.”
Glendale Healthy Kids has a devoted staff of four and a committed board of directors, Roth said. In 2012, more than 500 units of medical service and more than 3,000 units of educational service were provided.
“The types of services provided by Glendale Healthy Kids are unique in that it treats the whole person through preventative health-education classes beginning in preschool, to community-wide health fairs servicing the entire family,” Roth said.
Its 19-year partnership with the Glendale Unified school district allows the group to immediately service children in all areas of medical need — from mental health to broken bones. It can provide dental and orthodontic services, surgery, nutrition education, asthma education, dyslexia testing/intervention and diabetes and obesity education programs.
The overall goal of Glendale Healthy Kids is to ensure that no child’s medical, dental or mental health needs go untreated due to financial constraints. The organization achieves its goal by administering a volunteer network of more than 200 highly qualified, multi-lingual health-care providers from throughout the area.
Barnes and Tygenhof are engaged
Lacey Barnes and Eric Tygenhof have announced their engagement.
Lacey is the daughter of Rick and Margie Barnes of Glendale and Eric is the son of Felice Gersh and Bob Tygenhof of Irvine.
The future bride and groom are planning a summer wedding.
