On the Town: Area charity groups light up the night
“Tropical Breezes” with attire to match was the appropriate theme for Las Candelas’ Summer Party.
On Sunday, Oakmont Country Club’s patio overlooking the fairway provided the balmy setting for some 70 members and guests enjoying the cooler temperatures. The 47 active members of Las Candelas know how to work hard and play hard.
Event co-chairman Dianne Russell believes that members work diligently for the group’s philanthropies because of the social events, as provided this evening, in which they got to know each other. Russell’s social committee included her co-chairman Bobbi Gangi, assisted by Marilyn Butler.
Honored were Jeannie Flint, the group’s president, and Monica Sierra, immediate past president. They were the belles of the ball during an early evening reception followed by a buffet dinner of chicken, rice and grilled steak skewers.
Among the Glendale residents enjoying dinner were Debbie and Bruce Hinkley, Fran and Terry Buchanan, Cathy and Bob Keene, Glady and Jack Kabateck, Marion Grayden and Paul Greene and Sharon and Doug Anderson. Sharon Anderson is the new press chairman for Las Candelas.
Members of the 60-year-old organization provide help for emotionally disturbed children Hathaway-Sycamores Home, Hillsides Education Center, Glendale Healthy Kids, the Glendale YWCA and the Didi Hirsch Center.

The waning summer twilight made the Casa Adobe de San Rafael glow.
Enjoying the scene were dozens of members of Glendale Beautiful gathered to celebrate their annual dinner and their 63rd year. On Friday, the evening began with appetizers followed by a buffet dinner catered by Damon’s. The steakhouse’s signature salad was only surpassed by its steak, chicken and potatoes au gratin.
Myra Kendall, president of Glendale Beautiful, welcomed her audience and Koko Panossian, who led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Making her public debut was tiny Rachel Lemoine, 2 1/2 months old. Rachel is the soon-to-be-adopted daughter of Glendale City Council member Laura Friedman and husband, Guillaume Lemoine. Friedman offered greetings from the city. Rachel enjoyed the evening from the comfort of her stroller.
Members of the Glendale Beautiful board in attendance included Mary Rose Grim, vice president, Judy Gorham, secretary, Gladys Wymore, treasurer, and Doyle Kutch, auditor. All are Glendale residents.
The program began as dinner started. Entertainment was presented by Elizabeth Queen, a senior in the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State Long Beach. Queen is the daughter of proud parents Roberta Medford and Dr. John Queen, who teaches at Glendale Community College.
The evening ended with Gorham’s homemade lemon cake and a fast-paced opportunity drawing emceed by Lynda Burns.
Glendale Beautiful’s next meeting will be held at Joe Bridges Clubhouse on Dec. 3.
