Timpson powers CV

GLENDALE — After shooting their best collective round of the season, the Crescenta Valley High boys’ golf team is moving on to the CIF playoffs as the No. 2 team in the Pacific League.

Michael Timpson, a senior, tied for low-medalist honors with a one-over-par 72 on Tuesday at De Bell Golf Course in Burbank to lead the Falcons to a third-place finish in the league finals.

Arcadia won the round — and clinched the league title — with team score of 383, Burbank was second with a 389 and Crescenta Valley shot a 400, but remained ahead of the Bulldogs in the final league standings by virtue of having one more regular-season league win.

“Michael played well, he’s disappointed [because] he felt he should be under par, but nobody was under par today,” said Crescenta Valley Coach John Pehar, whose team (15-10, 14-7 in league) advanced to the CIF Southern California Regionals to be played at Soule Park in Oxnard on Monday. “You can’t hang your head with that score.”

Timpson, who shared low-medalist honors with Arcadia sophomore Richard Jeong, had an up-and-down day, to say the least.

After losing his ball and having to re-tee on the first hole, Timpson bogeyed after sinking a 25-foot putt.

He went on to collect three birdies on the front nine, only to double-bogey the ninth hole to finish at even par.

Junior Aaron Peskett fired a 79 for the Falcons, followed by freshman Adrian Chia (82), senior Jason Kim (83) and junior John Lee.

“I’m happy with Aaron’s score,” Pehar said. “I think he shot about as well as he can play.

“The scores probably could have been a little lower for the other ones, but I think they did OK.”

Eighteen players shot an 83 or better on Tuesday to make the cut for the league individual finals, which will take place today at De Bell.

The aforementioned Falcons, along with Hoover junior Alan Cho, who carded an 80, will compete for five spots in the CIF Southern California Regional individual tournament at River Ridge in Oxnard.

Glendale’s top golfer was sophomore Evan Norton, who carded an 87.
