A replica wood rifle carried by an ROTC student at Crescenta Valley High School was mistaken for a real weapon on Monday and briefly sent the campus into a full lockdown.

The student had gone home to retrieve the replica and jumped a fence to get back onto campus when he returned sometime before 2:50 p.m., according to a statement sent by Linda Gubler Junge, the school’s principal.

A nearby resident saw the student get back onto campus and, thinking the fake firearm to be a real weapon, called police.

The campus was soon placed on lockdown, with students and faculty being ordered to shelter in place as deputies from the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station conducted a search of the area.

Deputies eventually discovered it was the ROTC student with his replica weapon that caused the false alarm and the lockdown was lifted just after 3 p.m.
