GCC offers media arts certificates

The Glendale Community College Media Arts Department offers certification, training and hands-on experience in disciplines such as digital cinematography, digital audio recording and editing, DVD authoring, podcasting and digital post-production.

This fall, courses include Intro. to Video Production (TV studio production with multiple cameras), Intro. to Digital Cinematography (using new digital HD cameras), Video Production Practicum (for advanced students), Intro to Audio Production, Digital Video Editing, and Media Streaming and Production. Students have access to a state-of-the-art Mac lab that features Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro and Pro Tools programs.

Students gain hands-on experience, including the opportunity to work on producing an information talk show that airs locally on the educational access channel and programming for campus Web radio.

GCC has an articulation agreement with Cal State Northridge’s Cinema and Television Arts program and the courses are transferable to other public and private four-year colleges and universities. Students can also earn certificates of completion in videography, mass media and corporate television.

Mike Petros, associate professor of media arts, states, “our most popular and most viable certificate at present is the videography certificate. This gives students the training and experience they need to obtain entry-level industry positions as assistant editors, production assistants, camera assistants and media coordinators.” Courses for the videography certificate include art design, photography and lighting, as well as core media arts classes.

The Media Arts Department curriculum is adjusted to trends in the industry. Independent Digital Film Production, Non-linear Digital Editing, Digital Audio Post-Production and Visual Effects are currently among the most prevalent career paths. Career-minded students benefit from training on up-to-date equipment, creating work for their portfolios and developing a professional work ethic in the GCC program.

FIRE ACADEMY APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED

Applications are being accepted for the Verdugo Fire Academy Class XV that begins in January. The application deadline is 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 28.

Anyone interested in applying to the fire academy is encouraged to attend one of the academy’s monthly recruitment information meetings. The meetings are designed to assist prospective cadets in making an informed decision about joining the Verdugo Fire Academy. Upcoming meetings will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on July 7, Aug. 4, Sept. 9 and Oct. 6 in room 108 of the Aviation/Art Building on the GCC campus.

Programs offered by the academy include Fire Technology courses, certificate of completion in Fire Technology, an Associate in Science degree in Fire Technology, a Basic Firefighter Academy and California State Fire Training and Education System (CFSTES) Courses. Graduates of the Verdugo Basic Firefighter Academy will complete the training portion required for Firefighter I.

IMPORTANT DATES

Glendale College is on summer schedule, with the campus closed on Fridays through Aug. 26. Regular office hours will resume when the fall semester begins on Aug. 29. The college will also be closed on July 4. The summer session ends July 28. Priority registration for fall is July 25 through Aug. 12.
