City Briefs: Deukmejian Wilderness Park hike looks at medicinal plants; Registration for Verdugo Mountains 10K

The Sparr Heights Community Center will host a “Parent’s Night Out” from 6 p.m. to midnight on Friday. The center is located at 1613 Glencoe Way in Glendale.
Cost is $15 per child for ages 5 to 12. Children will take part in a variety of activities including playing games, eating dinner and watching a movie. Parents will receive a small discount at participating restaurants in the Montrose Shopping Park.

A hike looking at “Medicinal Plants of the West” will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Deukmejian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road in Glendale.
During the hike, Dr. James Adams, from USC School of Pharmacy, will cover topics such as ways the Chumash Indians use native plants as medicine and the role of these plants in everyday healthcare.
Reservations are required by calling (818) 548-3795, and all participants must sign a waiver.
Participants should also wear sturdy shoes and protective clothing.

A community health fair called “Your Health, Your Hospital” will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, 1812 Verdugo Blvd., Glendale.
Held in collaboration with Glendale Healthy Kids, the event will be held on the hospital’s fourth-floor main lobby and patio area.
In addition to free screenings for adults and children, there will also be free airbrush body art.
Parking will be available in the upper parking structure located behind the hospital off of La Tour Way.

Registration is now open for the Verdugo Mountains 10K Trail Run and Hike, which will start at 8 a.m. on Sunday at Brand Park, 1601 W. Mountain St.
Presented by Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital, the 6.2-mile event will benefit the Glendale Parks & Open Space Foundation.

A Taste of Montrose will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday in downtown Montrose.
Tickets are $20 for the event, which will feature culinary samples from participating restaurants.
Proceeds will benefit Prom Plus, a post-prom chaperoned event for Crescenta Valley High seniors and their guests at Crescenta-Cañada YMCA.

The 24th annual Cops-For-Kids Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Monday at La Cañada Flintridge Country Club, 5500 Godbey Drive, La Cañada. Registration will be from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., with tee-off at 8 a.m.
Sponsored by the Glendale Police Officers’ Assn., the event raises funds for Cops-For-Kids, a program that funds the needs of local underprivileged, disabled and at-risk children as well as those who have been victims of a crime or accident.
